I recently migrated from Windows XP to Windows 7 (64 bit). After the migration, my HP Laserjet 3030 MFP (USB cable connect) gives me an error whenever I try to print anything.

I updated the printer drivers for my printer using the default driver set in Windows 7. The plug and play feature recognized my printer, created a printer icon in the control panel and set my printer as the default printer.

The printer properties says that I need troubleshooting, but the MS troubleshooting utility can not find a problem. The MS Fixit utility for the problem does not resolve the issue either.

I also tried downloading updated printer drivers from HP.com. After installing the printer drivers, I still get an error condition when I try to print anything.

I tried to install the printer on my laptop under Windows 8. I used the drivers for my printer that came preinstalled with Windows 8. The printer was recognized (plug and play), but I still can't print anything.

If it is relevant to the problem, both computers are Dell products that came with Windows factory installed.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Update: I tried to install a new Canon ImageClass printer (USB cable connect) on my Windows 7 computer. I installed the printer drivers from the CD that came with the printer. This printer also gives me an error condition whenever I try to print anything. I returned the printer, since it now seems I have an OS issue.

Uninstall the printer. Put the disc and when it tells you to plug in the printer, do it. Lots of USB printers require the disc be run first before plugging in the printer.

I agree completely with the above. Much frustration has resulted when users connect the printer before installing the drivers.

Unfortunately, simply uninstalling the printer does not always work. You may need to uninstall the printer, then reboot to reset all the counters, then follow the instructions in the printer manual for installing.

Also, it is critical you select the correct bit drivers. So if you are running 64-bit Windows, you MUST select 64-bit printer drivers.

I would also try a different USB cable and USB port just to eliminate those from the equation.

    Thanks to all who responded.

I did follow the manufacturer's directions for installing the printer before connecting the printer cable.

Also tried different USB ports, both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. The Windows 7 instructions for a printer connected to a USB port are to connect the printer, then let Plug and Play do its thing.

Plug and Play does recognize my printer, but the HP LaserJet PCL 5 driver that windows wants to use for my printer does not work. Whenever I try to print anything, the printer utility (See what's printing) just says "Error-print" for the document I sent to the printer.

I went back to my old computer and plugged in the printer. It works, but what is interesting is that the Printer icon (Control Panel, Printers and Devices) shows my printer as labeled HP LaserJet PCL 6. I can't seem to find a driver for this printer device when I do the Windows driver update on my new Windows 7 computer.

The HP site does have a Universal Printer driver for PCL 6, but that does not solve my problem. That driver might not be 64 bit compatible.

Any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Antik,

I did not upgrade from XP to 7. I migrated. I have a separate CPU with Windows 7 factory installed. I want to use the HP printer that is currently attached to my Windows XP CPU as the default printer on my Windows 7 system. The printer issue I am trying to resolve is centered around finding a printer driver that will allow my printer to work in a Windows 7 (64) environment.

The HP site shows the same driver for Win7 32 and 64 bit systems.

Concentrate on a direct connection to the Win7 system only, and follow the steps on the suggested page to be sure all previous drivers are removed.

Reset the printer. Disconnect the power cord and the USB cable. Wait a few minutes, and put a sheet of paper in the tray.

Hold down the (*) button and the menu/enter button and power the printer up. When you see "performing Initialization ", release the buttons.

With the printer disconnected from any PC, Press menu/enter.

Use the < or the > button to select Reports, and then press menu/enter.

Use the < or the > button to select Config report, and then press menu/enter.

The printer should exit the menu settings and print a test report.

Have you tried the tools in the HP Printer Administrator Resource Kit here?

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ds-99433-5

How about the HP auto online check for correct driver here?

    http://www.hp.com/cpso-support-new/SDD/index.htm?lang=en&cc=us

Note you must be running the MSIE browser for the site to work. If you can get a universal driver to at least print, then run the driver check to see if an alternative is suggested.

We are using both Windows 7 64 bit and Windows XP 32 bit at work. We run the HP Universal drivers which allow all our different printer models to work with both operating systems.

It needs to be "HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v 5.3) ". Those are about the only ones that will work (v 5.2 are listed).

If you installed another set of drivers, it is best to uninstall those before installing the new ones. Look under Start -> All Programs in case there is an uninstaller there. Look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features for an uninstaller. You can also delete the printer in the printers list (Hardware and Printers) and if it asks to remove related software, do so.

Then install those Universal PCL 6 drivers.
