Background: I live in a rural area where, through the county, we have been offered WiMax broadband through a company called Cue Band. I currently have Frontier DSL installed as a dry loop on a Netgear 7500 wireless modem/router. We were offered this service gratis as we were the first installation and knew there would be bugs to work out.
The WiMax antenna was installed and my laptop was configured to use that service as the Local Area Connection. But there have been many problems and the signal is not being sent consistently from the antenna.

My problem now is that I have just started having a problem with the wireless connection. The little wireless icon in the taskbar? keeps flipping between the original configured Frontier5925 network and something called "Access Point ". My internet connection when connected to Firefox continues to either get a timeout or server not found. It is worse than dial up. I am not having any problems with any of my other computers so I am almost sure that the problem lies with the WiMax configuration interfering.

I tried to create a new connection through network connections, but no new local area connection is ever created. I have entered the command ipconfig /all and have finally gotten the correct numbers showing on the screen but still no luck with a quick Firefox connection.

Can I delete the driver for the local are connection (which is the WiMax) and then create a new connection without causing a problem?

In short, what I have are two service providers battling between each other. I want to completely eliminate the WiMax configuration and only use the Frontier configuration.

First try changing the wifi channel on the Netgear 7500 wireless modem/router to a channel that's 10 channels opposite the wimax channel, e.g. one at channel 1 and the other at channel 11.

Thank you. Frontier was set at channel 4 and I moved it to 11. This helped with the internet connection.

Is there a way to access the gateway to the WiMax to set it to a lower channel? From the ipconfig /all, it shows their Autoconfiguration IP Address as 169.254.0.0 and the Subnet Mask as 255.255.0.0. The Physical address is 00-00-00-00-00-00.

Is there a way to totally eliminate this connection?

UPDATE: It is still switching between the Frontier wireless connection at 54Mbps and the "Access Point" (which I think is the WiMax service) and drops to 48Mbps and won't connect to the internet.

    Any other suggestions?

Per those numbers you don't have a connection to the wimax. 169.x.x.x is an IP assigned by Windows and the 00's are a blank MAC address.

Just remove the wimax connection completely.

Does it matter that it is the only Local Area Connection?

I am not sure how to completely remove it other than to remove the driver, then how do I reinstall the driver?

Go to Device Manager and uninstall the network adapter (not the wifi adapter). Reboot and Windows' "found new hardware" wizard will run and load the driver. Have the drivers for it handy just in case Windows can't find a driver, but likely it will find it because the drivers don't get removed when uninstalling via Device Manager.

Well, I thought the problem was solved, but I guess not.

The laptop keeps switching between the Frontier wireless connection and Access Point. Once again the Mbps drops and so does the signal once connected to an access point.
I did delete the network adapter and things would work just fine. When I did restart the laptop and the adapter was reloaded, I would start having problems again. I changed the channel also and that would help for awhile.

I don't know where my laptop is picking up this access point.

One thing I did notice was that on the Frontier gateway, the IP address ends in 15 but when I do a ipconfig /all, the IP address shows that it is 17. Could this be causing the switching around problem and how do I get it changed back to 15?

I also wanted to add that the WiMax antenna equipment is completely disconnected so what I thought was causing the problem apparently is not.

My son just hooked up his Apple TV. Could this be causing interference on my network?

Another note: My iPhone and another Apple laptop connect wirelessly and I am having no problems at all with them. Also my PC is connected directly to the Modem/router and it is fine too. The problem is solely with the laptop.

If the unwanted connection uses the wired adapter then just disable that adapter.

I am totally wireless on the laptop upon which I am having the problem. The only wired connection is from the Frontier Netgear 7500 wireless modem/router which is connected to my PC on the 2nd floor. The wimax antenna is completely removed, unplugged and I hope dead (if I find out it is the culpret).

Could the Netgear 7500 from Frontier be going dead and causing this problem? My signal strength has been moving from excellent to low and not so much switching between Frontier wireless connection and access point. Good days and bad days. All along I may have been fooled into believing that the Wimax has been the one causing the problem.

I have finally decided that it must be my wireless part of the Netgear 7550 Modem/router that has finally died.

I called Frontier support and they were no help at all since she was not all that familiar with XP and could not direct me in trying to solve the problem. (I will, however, call again to speak with another tech or just make them send one of their techs.)

What I did do before calling support was attach my son's Apple Air Port extreme to the Netgear and I could connect and stay connected. Then I switched back to the Frontier wireless connection. It would connect then disconnect.

End result for now is that I am using the Airport.

Just a note: My gateway IP address is: 192.168.254.15 but when I do an ipconfig /all using the CMD I get an address of 192.168.254.17. I do not know how this has happened but I manually entered the address in the network connections to the gateway address and it is working so far.

Also the Local Area Connection address on the laptop using the ipconfig /all is different from the address on my PC which is directly connected to the Netgear.
