I was cleaning C drive over the weekend and deleted a bunch of orphans and other (I thought) unused files. Now I can not get to log in on any of my secure web sites. (Bank, broker,Att, etc.) I get the "This page cannot be displayed" error with "Cannot find server or DNS error" at the bottom. I can get to all other sites. I tried the " repair IE tool" but that will not run. It says I am missing file "estier2.dll" I have checked the security settings and they are all fine. IE 5.0.3314.2101, Sp2. Java: VM 5.0.0 3809. Any ideas before I try reinstalling IE 5? A real pain. (I did a scanreg/restore but that had no effect. I only had regs back two days because of cleaning and rebooting. I think I save 10 but don't know where they are or how to role back past the few options in scanreg/restore. Also, if I deleted a needed file restoring an old reg won't help. ) TIA

You can try reinstalling IE5.01sp2 using C:\Windows Update Setup Files\Ie5setup.exe (if it exists). Here is a NG thread I found with the details. It talks about IE5.5 but the same should apply to IE5. You MAY want to install IE5.5sp2 though, seeing that earlier versions of IE are no longer eligible for security updates on Windows 9x

You might be able to avoid downloading internet explorer.
First of all ie 5.5 offers you a way to do repairs. Do
this. If you're running win95, 98 or ME go to
    start/settings/control panel/add/remove programs.
doubleclick on Microsoft Internet Explorer and tools. A
dialogue box will pop up. Select the option to repair
Internet Explorer and then click okay. Then you'll see
another window pop up with a progress bar. Just wait until
its finished. It will prompt you that Windows needs to be
restarted. Click okay and let windows restart. Then after
you come back to the desktop fire up internet explorer
and see if you can print a web page. Now, if that doesn't
work you can reinstall internet explorer by running
ie5Setup.exe which is located in your Windows Update Setup
Files Folder on the c drive. Do this. Right click on the
start button, click on Explore and up will come Windows
Explorer. At or near the bottom of the c drive you will
see a folder called Windows Update Setup Files.
Doubleclick on that and then scroll down until you see a
file called ie5Setup. Doubleclick on that and then windows
update setup will begin. Of course, make sure no windows
programs are running when you do this so that no hangups
occur. What this will do is install internet explorer as
well as outlook express and some other tools. You just
want internet explorer so do this. When the screen comes
up for windows update follow the prompts until you get to
the screen where it asks you whether you want the typical
components installed or the minimum. Choose the minimum
because you want to just select ie5.5. Then you'll get a
list of components. Scroll down until you see Internet
Explorer and then put a check in the box to the left of it
and then click next on the bottom. It will then begin
getting the files and installing them over the internet
explorer files already there. This will work just fine.
Then you'll be prompted to restart. Do this and then
you'll be back at your desktop.

I apologize for the lengthy tutorial but I have no way of
knowing what your windows skill level is at and so I aimed
at being as explicit as possible.

Thanks Alice, I got the repair tool to run but that did not help so I re-installed Ie5 , as you suggested, and now everything is fine. Curious. I am happy I did not have to re-install Windows! Have a Great Xmas.
