[Inactive] Making sure not to keep any threats...

Hi, just looking for help with my laptop pc again, please.

I want to do this before moving a majority of the files on my laptop pc over to an external large storage hard drive I bought. As such, I don't want to keep any viruses that may be lurking in my pc at the current time.

In order to run aswmbr correctly, I had to move the folders that contained the files that mbr kept having hick-ups on. I think they are the same files that avast full scans can not scan due to some sort of compression bomb. I prepared this time by taking screen shots and writing up what I thought of to say in this thread before hand. I'll post what I have gathered thus far now.

Topic Title: Help request for laptop pc issues before data transfer, please.

Hello, I would like help in clearing any and all malware and/or virus’s from my laptop. I would like to do this before moving a good majority of the information I have on my internal hard drive, to an external hard drive I purchased in order to free up space for performance and remove clutter on my laptop. Therefore, in order to either nearly or completely remove any hidden threat that may come up due to transferring of files which may have malicious or otherwise harmful software, I am asking for help here first and foremost to clear anything that is wrong with my laptop pc. This includes things that I have experienced, and issues that remain hidden.

I have had some issues with my laptop pc for some time. Though, with scans from windows defender, avast anti-virus, and malware bytes, nothing seems to show up. Therefore, I can only conclude that what is wrong with my laptop pc, was programmed not to be picked up so easily. I would like as thorough of a look into my laptop pc as needed in order to "flush out" any and all issues.

One issue that has occurred as of late, is browser windows repetitively popping up. One recent example was when I was viewing a video news article from the www.yahoo.com web site, the tab that I was viewing the video, after viewing it, stopping it, and then closing the tab, kept popping open. After some time, under 15 minutes I’m sure, this issue stopped. A few times, I got the message that internet explorer stopped working. I closed this pop up message and continue to close the tabs and windows that followed the repeat pop up. I ran scans when this first initially occurred some few days ago. Sadly, nothing was detected so nothing was fixed. I would like help fixing this issue among the others I will bring up please.

Another issue I have noticed is that when I go to a site that I use for job hunting, www.employflorida.com when I try to send a reply to a message I got in the message system of that site, the internet connection just dies soon after the attempt. This happens either before I try to send the reply, or after I hit the send the reply, but always in conjunction with the replying of messages. This has also occurred to me when I have checked my email and tried replying to emails from my www.yahoo.com email address. I am able to eventually send the email, but this issue is quite annoying. Its only due to the habit I got of putting what I write in a word document and saving it just in case of anything, that I picked up from my schooling days, that I do not get to upset and lose what work I put into writing anything. I know the connection dies because the loading of the next screen takes much longer than it should, and after which, I get the message in the browser that internet explorer cannot display the web page or something to that affect. The modem even conks out when this issue happens, but comes back 15 to 1 hour and 30 minutes later. I have tested this as to trying to restart my laptop pc, go to any other site, which shows that it is fine, then go to the site that I was at and in the screen where I was at before the loss of connection. Every time I’ve tested this, if I push the issue immediately after it occurred, the issue repeats itself. It goes away if I leave my laptop pc alone for a while. I do not like this, and want this fixed. I am willing to follow orders in order to fix this issue permanently. This issue appeared some time ago, but isn’t always present and doesn’t always show up. Nonetheless, I would like to find this issue, resolve it, and make sure it never pops up again.

Lastly, I would like to know if there are any issues with any of the programs I have on my laptop pc which I should address and or get rid of said programs. One such example of this is the Norton program updater. To sum this one up, I just want to know if there are any programs that may seem legitimate, but are ones which are recommended to not have, which I have on my laptop pc. Another one that comes to mind is an add on to my browsers, the "Ask" toolbar. I am able to disable the add on in Internet Explorer, but I am unable to disable it from the extensions menu of Google Chrome. I would like help disabling this feature from Google Chrome or if I should just remove/uninstall the add on all together. With these two example, I would like the same applied to all programs I have on my laptop pc. I would like feedback as to which are okay to have, which are recommended to have and which to not have, and which I should never have gotten and to remove them.

This should cover all areas in regards to malware related issues. I have concerns when it comes to a newly installed program I have which I will ask when appropriate, and for feedback upon storing software on external hard drive devices. For now, I’ll continue with the procedure of the recommended programs for scanning my laptop pc. I should also mention that I have the programs that were asked of my last time I asked for help still installed on my laptop pc. I do this because one, I like having free, safe, and secure, programs that help protect and ensure the safety of my information on any computer I own at any given time. Two, there have been times in the past when I have had issues on my computers at the time, which I could not access online to download software to help fix my issue on my computer, whether those issues were malware or viruses or trojans or other types. Having said programs saved my skin at times, so that’s why I like them. Being free is just an after perk to me.

I ran malware bytes that I already had installed on my laptop pc. Nothing was found.

I tried to re-download the aswMBR.exe file from Internet Explorer but I got the message stating that internet explorer stopped working, so the download did not happen. I tried the same thing from Google Chrome and was able to download the file. I took a screen shot of when I opened the folder the download was downloaded into to show a rather suspicious thing. I never leave a minimized window that small or in that manner, so that is disturbing me.

I would like help thoroughly looking into the setting of Internet Explorer after this doing this step. I think that there is something seriously affecting it that is wrong or some setting that should not be set up as is.

Another issue I have recently seen is starting up Internet Explorer.

When I click on the icon on the bottom of the taskbar where I had pinned the icon, it would open up Internet explorer, but on an additional icon to the side in addition to what I have open at the time. I go into the start window, and find the Internet explorer icon program in the programs list, when I start it up this way, it opens up the internet explorer program on the icon I have pinned to the taskbar. However, when I try to open up a new window, an additional internet explorer icon on the taskbar opens up, even if I do the method from the programs list.

I have no idea why this is happening and it is recent. I would like help solving this and fixing what ever this issue is.

that's all for now, I'll check back tomorrow. I know the rules (or at least try to remember), that to reply within 5 days or the thread is auto closed, and to follow instructions to the letter. I'll be checking back here daily to see responses. I won't pester, or anything close to annoyance. I'll be respectful and mind my manners in getting you responses in as quickly in an orderly fashion as possible. Thank you, to all who will help me with anything and everything that may/is wrong with my laptop pc. I look forward to the help I will get.

Oh, and if you want to know the files I took off my pc to run mbr, I'll gladly post those as well. I made sure to only put those on the external hard drive as for now. Just to make sure I get 9/10 of the laptop pc cleared before anything else.

    See ya later.

    Please, observe following rules:
    • Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
    • If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
    • Please refrain from running any tools, fixes or applying any changes to your computer other than those I suggest.
    • Never run more than one scan at a time.
    • Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
    • The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
    • If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
    • I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

[IMG] Create new restore point before proceeding with the next step....
    How to:
    - Windows 8: http://www.vikitech.com/11302/system-restore-windows-8
    - Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3195/create-a-system-restore-point-in-windows-7/
    - Vista: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...tore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/
    - XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247

[IMG] Please download ComboFix from Here, Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
If the connection is not there use restore point you created prior to running Combofix.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

    • NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security (Total Defense Internet Security) users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results ". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion ", restart computer to fix the issue.
**Note 4: Some infections may take some significant time to be cured. As long as your computer clock is running Combofix is still working. Be patient.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try the following...

Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
    Do NOT run it yet.
Download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
    iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

    Restart computer in safe mode

    • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
    • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
    • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
    • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
    • Do not reboot until instructed.
    • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill.txt log.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.

IF you had to run rKill post BOTH logs, rKill.txt and Combofix.txt.

I don't see anything malicious in your logs.
You should be good to go.

thank you for the help. Though what I described initially still does worry me, your assurance is still greatly appreciated. Thank you. If you do not see anything thus far, I guess I'll put this thread as resolved by an expert now before I forget. Again, I thank you, Broni for all of your help. Thank you.

Edit: Its not letting me be able to select resolved in the thread tools drop down list.

You can't do this in this forum.
I marked is as "Inactive" as we didn't solve anything.
