I can not even go back one day using System Restoration. Tried turning off AVG, tried using IE instead of FF. also cleared out my Restoration Points...

Lat time I tried it about two months ago it was working. Nothing here really changed as far as I can tell.

I did try to use it a week or so ago because I had to change my email SMTP settings, after that I got warnings when ever I open Outlook 2003.

The Outlook 2003 problem is in another thread I posted, but I doubt it is related to the system restore problem.

You cleared out all of your restore points. Do any of the date/day numbers in the calendar appear darker then others?

I have one that was generated when I checked restore points ON.

I cleared them out by ticking the box "turn of system restore on all drives" in restore settings.

When I un-ticked the box it automatically set a restore point for that time as soon as I turned SR back on.

I have not tried reinstalling system restore yet as Tallin recommended

As far as I know, the system was/is working properly when the restore point was created by turning restore off then back on.

Thanks for the link. I am going to try Tallin' suggestion next...

Tallin, I got as far as clicking install, then I got a dialog box stating: Heading files needed> The file 'sr.sys' on windows xp home edition service pack 3 cd is needed>

Type the path where the file is located, and then click ok>

    copy files from:
    c:\windows\inf\i368

I did not do this part because at this point I do not know what I am doing, If I ckick OK don't know what will happen next. I don't thin I need all the files from inf\i368...

Gary, I am consulting with a pal on here to advise you further, however you do need your Windows XP CD so make sure you have it at the ready. My pal is asleep now as he lives in the States, so a few hours of patience will be necessary.

    kind regards,

Hi, If you have your installation disc, you can run it and explore/locate i386 and copy and paste to C: drive.
You can then run sfc /scannow.
If it keeps asking for XP CD to be installed - navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath via regedit.
Make sure the entry here is the same path to the i386 folder as used above.
    (C:\i386).
This will show if all files are in place. Neil.

I only have the xp sp2 disc. The the copy files from:
c:\windows\inf\i368 is in a button, already looks like it will find the file but not sure. then once I get it don't know what to do.

I have not gone into my hard drive this deep alone before. I am, well scared to be honest if I am not sure..

What is the problem you are trying to fix here? Does your computer work?

It seems there is some confusion over "restoration" and "restore ". A "restoration" takes the computer (or the OS) back to its original out-of-the-box factory configuration - as if the computer were new. A "restore" or System Restore, takes the Registry and "some" Windows settings, including drivers, back to the day the "Restore Point" was made.

If you disabled SR, those points are gone forever. If you do a restoration, you will take Windows back YEARS in updates. You say you have an SP2 disk, is XP up to SP3 like it should be?

If SR was not working, you might see if Microsoft FixIt can help. Just remember, past points are gone so it will only provide new points.

In any case, I think we need to know what it is you are trying to fix.

When I try to use systerm restore it goes through the restore cycle, but when computer reboots by it self after going back, I get a Restore Incomplete, your computer has not been restored to an earlier time...

What I am stuck on is reinstalling the system restore application. As suggested here by Tallin..

    Hi gary7.

You will have to slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 3 onto your Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD and then use the new Windows XP Service Pack 3 CD to repair System Restore. Take a look at this article for instructions on how to do this, Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD.

I would try the FixIt link before dealing with a Slipstream disk. If FixIt works, it will save you a lot of work.

That said, having a current slipstream disk can save you a lot of hassles down the road.

Thank you everyone, finally got "System Restore" reinstalled and working. I had to copy & paste files from sys32 Boy, I sure learned a lot during the process. I followed Tallin's instructions, then I had to track down and add files as I went along. did not need a cd because the files were still in Windows, just a matter of finding them....
