i was hit by a virus on my nvideo setup. i reinstalled from nvideo and solved my problem. the file was nv4_mini.sys. it was discovered by virustotal.com (excellent site for single file check) to have 3 viruses. just for curiosity i had my computer tested by trendmicro.com (household 7.1) but unfortunately they did not discover any virus on my computer. to be fair, i sent this question to them only yesterday, so i am hoping to hear from them.
    any ideas?
    thanks in advance
    yours,
    shlomo

I've never heard of virustotal.com . How well do you trust them:confused:

Beside not all scanners are created equal - some spit out false positives which maybe what virustotal.com did.

thanks for your reply. i use mywot.com for testing sites. my son also informed me that some sites are not as reliable as others. he does like microtrend and my son intends to independently test that file.

Malware, short for Malicious (or Malevolent) Software, is software designed to damage, disable and/or otherwise interfere with a computer's normal functioning ... which would include viruses.

nv4_mini.sys is a legit file and personally I've never seen it infected.

Can you post a log from VirusTotal?
3 positives out of 40 or so scans are not really that worrying.

it may not be worrying but the fact is that it solved (i hope) my constant crashing problem.
here is the list of the 3 viruses that virustotal found:
    Antivirus Result Update
    Anty-AVL Trojan/Win32.Agent.gen 20130317
    ClamAv Win.Trojan.Agent-192987 20130320
    TheHacker Trojan/Agent.hvyb 20130320
    thank you for replying

i was under the impression that not all malware seeking programs will detect viruses. i actually also tested my computer with microsoft's mbam anti-malware program. this also turned up nothing on my computer. so this only increases my question about the virustotal result.
    thanks

    1. Unfortunately there is no single Anti-:
      • -Adware
      • -DDoS
      • -Dialer
      • -Exploit
      • -Keylogger
      • -malicious BHO (Browser Helper Object)
      • -Monitoring tool
      • -Ransomware
      • -RAT (Remote Access Tool)
      • -Rootkit
      • -Rouge Security Software
      • -Spyware
      • -Trojan
      • -Virus
      • -Worm
      • -etc.
solution, and probably never will be.

(And, this long list of malcious software is why so many simply refer to it all as "Malware ").

    2. More often than not, the majority of active malware threats are usually Trojans and Adware rather than Viruses.

nv4_mini.sys is a part of your nVidia video driver.
Possibly you need to reinstall it.

i already wrote that i don't have a crashing problem ever since i reinstalled my nvidea program (see my previous logons). that is not the subject of my discussion. the question was how come virustotal.com shows my file as a virus whereas microtrend and microsoft don't detect the virus error.
    thanks,
    yours, shlomo

I can only assume that those three engines are wrong (which happens).

By design, more-sophisticated malware scripts change every time they run; they effectively create a custom version and, in doing so,
change their identity every time they run.
That constant change defeats much of the security software in use, which is looking for some previous design [or signature].â€

Does that mean installing and using AV software is futile? "No," says Brandt, "any amount of protection certainly helps. Some security software is better than others at finding and quarantining infections, but
no single product can detect everything that’s out there, especially when it changes by the minute "” not by the day, by the minute!“

As Brandt explains, AV programs need to cross-check each instance of a malware attack against a constantly updated database. But a database containing every version of malware is infeasible; it gets too large to be of practical use. Hacking codes often change their signature by as little as one byte "” which might be enough to defeat signature-matching. Moreover, well-written (for want of a better term) malware uses obfuscation techniques to hide itself within a PC. "So an infection can be found only after the damage is done." Brandt notes, "Of course, then it’s too late.â€

To prevent infections, says Brandt, "You’ve got to embrace [anti-malware] deficiencies and take more personal responsibility.
    ...
The top three ways to deter malware on a PC:
    1. Stop using Windows XP.
    2. Install and keep updated security software such as the free AVG and Malwarebytes.
    3. Most important: Think before clicking any link
      and
whenever Windows unexpectedly asks whether you want to proceed with a change to your PC settings.

The file was most likely corrupted.
When you reinstalled your video driver you got brand new file.

you only repeated what i wrote in the original problem. the original problem is not looking for a solution for my computer but for a reason why the other programs did not catch the problem.
