OK! well I'm just getting started. I have already chosen the following:
    CPU: AMD Athlon/T-Bird 1.4GHz-266
Memory: Corsair 256MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM
    Motherboard: Asus A7M266
Now I'm looking for a hard drive and vid card.
Due to cash restrictions I'm looking for a 20/30 mb H/D at 7200 rpm (is there a big performance dif. between a 7200 and 10,000?I know the cash dif. is.)
The brands i am slightly familiar with are Fujitsu, IBM , Maxtor, Seagate ,and Western Digital . Ive heard some good about western digital but not sure.
Ok the vid Card.. I am a devoted gamer but i dont have $400.00 for a vid card here I'm just looking for suggestions.
    (still running a voodoo 3 2000 lol)
I'm solid on the Asus M/B and the T-bird but any suggestions on anything and i meen anything else would be very apprieciated..

    Thanks

    Welcome Zen1(or welcome back, whichever)

I'm not qualified to say which is best, but can say that when I built my first box a few months ago, I installed a WD 20Gb 7200 HDD that I bought at http://newegg.com/and see they have it now at about $69. Have had good luck/results with it so far and ordering from that particular company was without pain. Of course you can try http://www.pricewatch.com/ to check others. Mine is an AMD 1.2 on an Iwill KK266R and I used the stock h/s fan that came with the cpu and it did ok, but recently installed another h/s fan that lowered the cpu temps 10 to 15 deg F. under full load of distributed computing. If interested, I'll post back. Good luck.

Make sure you get at least an ATA-100 HDD. Don't bother with an ATA-66. I have a 30GB IBM deskstar 75gxp, and it runs great. BUT others have had problems with them dying (there is a thread on this board somewhere).

As for video cards definitely buy a Geforce. Get one of the 'Ti' cards. They have the most bang for the buck.

When I built my last computer I followed the Value Gaming System GUide @ Sharkyextreme.com, and I am still happy with my machine 14 months later. Check out this months recomendations.
