Just set up a new Dell XPS 8500 running Win 8 64 bit. In the Network and Sharing Center, my home network is listed as Public how to I change this to Home Network?

Why does it matter what the name is? The public can't get on it like the name suggest.

Sorry, I didn't mean the name of the network I meant to say the type of network where you select Home or Public.

Go to the start screen > rt click and select All apps.

Go to Run and type the command: secpol.msc to open the Local Security Policy applet.

In the left frame click on Network List Manager Policies >

In right frame double click Network > Network Location tab >

Change Location type from Not configured to Private > Apply button > close out the dialogs.

Go to Network & Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing > set desired sharing for Private, Public and All Networks.

Recommendation for Private is the following:
    Turn on Network Discovery
Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices.
Turn on file and printer sharing.
Homegroup connections > Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers.

To lock it all down securely, go to Run > services.msc > set Homegroup Listener & Homegroup Provider to disabled.

If want to setup sharing with other computers on the local network then follow this guide:
How to Network Windows 7 With Other Windows Versions (applies to Windows 8 too)

    TonyT,

When I type secpol.msc I get an error message stating "cannot find secpol.msc make sure you typed the name correctly... "

Dell XPS Windows 8 64 bit system

UPDATE: I was able to change the network from Public to Private. I went into Network and sharing and selected Homegroup. A message popped up saying "...to create a homegroup you must change from public to private and one option was to proceed with Home and Office network. Once I selected that option it changed my profile to Private.
