Internet Explorer in protected mode does not open a PDF within the browser

Windows 7 64 Professional + Internet Explorer 8 + Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard

I have to disable protected mode to get IE8 to open a PDF within the browser. If protected mode is enabled, I have to (in Acrobat > Preferences) uncheck "Display PDF in browser" which makes it open in a separate Acrobat window.

I know that I should upgrade the browser but there are reasons for me not to and I'm not sure it would solve the problem. (I dual boot Win XP pro and Win 7 pro and want to use the same browser.) Is there a way to get Acrobat to work within the browser in protected mode?

 

No, I haven't tried an alternative PDF-reader. I have the full version of Acrobat and need it.

 

Well, I installed Internet Explorer 9 and I was right, the "same" behaviour as in IE8. I had to disable protected mode to get IE9 to open a PDF within the browser. In Acrobat > Preferences, unchecking "Display PDF in browser" makes it open in a separate Acrobat window.

Since there are differences that makes it annoying to shift between the two, I will probably put Ghost to good use ... ... !

None of these documents open within the browser in protected mode but a few minutes ago, I came across a document that does:

"Arms Control "

... ... ...

 

Installing Internet Explorer 10 was not the solution. The behaviour is the same as in IE9 but I wasn't holding my breath ... ... !

 

Try adding the frequented sites with pdf downloads to the trusted sites zone. Protected Mode is only supposed to function in the other zones. Also, Protected Mode will turn off for all zones when you disable User Account Control. I always disable UAC on my own computers but keep it enabled on my clients' computers.

thanks for the hint but a popup tells that the prefix "https" is a requirement and that site doesn't come with one.

Turning UAC off makes a lot of things easier ... ... !
