My sister just bought a new computer with running OS Windows XP. We both have the same internet company, etc. But while mine will connect at anywhere between 48000 bmps to 49333 bmp, hers will only connect at 40000 bmp. We both have 56k modems installed. I'm running OS Windows 98SE. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Phone line noise could be a problem with connection speed on a dialup. Causes could be a fax machine, cordless phones, the local phone system is noisy, or faulty lines beyond your control outside of your house. Try picking up the phone and just dial in one number and listen for any static. If you suspect a faulty line, and if you call the phone company about it, do not mention anything about a computer modem, just report the noise. You could mention fax machine problems because of this, for some reason a fax machine is more important that a modem. I normally get a connection from 53333 to 54666, and that was after wrestling the phone company for three months before they discovered it was a tree.

Thanks. Sorry I forgot to mention this, it might help. The computer I now have is her old one, which means the connection speed is still the same even though it had the fax machine connected to it. Hope that helps and makes sense.

    Karri,

When we moved to a new house 4 miles away in 2001, my dial-up speed went from 53333 to 45333. Everything else identical the only difference was the part of town I was accessing the internet from.

Further investigation with phone co. revealed my former house was supplied by fiber optic lines in the network. The house I moved into is supplied entirely by copper all the way back to the phone exchange. Lower quality line - more 'noise' - slower connection speed.

There are so many different splices and connections within homes themselves never mind the splices and connections in the phone co. network. Each connection has the ability to introduce 'noise' into your connection. This isn't noise that you can necessarily hear but it may affect your connection speed.

With all the variables, it is not out of the ordinary that in different parts of town with the same ISP that different connection speeds occur.

    New Guy with Similar problem

My 56k modem connects at different speeds. The max I get is 52k which is fine with me.

But the modem randomly connects at speeds between 28k and 50666. If I disconnect and redial (up to 4 times) it gets the 52k connection.

First Question: Is this just the phone co. connecting me to different lines depending on traffic ?

Second Q: If so, is there an application for modems that would test the speed during HandShake and if the speed was below a preset default, try to reconnect until it hit the default. With an override in case .... ?

    Hi Karri

Connection speeds are like the weather, they are always changing.... and yes, weather IS one of many influences on your connection speeds. "Speed" and "through put" are also values to be considered. You may want to travel to this site. Take your time on this page. There are many options to explore. Good luck.

Thanks Bill, I tried the properties thing and it works to a degree.

Most of the time I get a good connect, but when it's bad, it's bad....won't connect at all.

Thing is.... Using your way, I'm better off cause I don't have to reconnect as often.

Thanks for your help....sorry for butting into somebody elses thread. Thought about it after I did it.... bulb was on dim again.
