A 2GB camera memory card is cracked and the camera is reporting it 'Protected' The 'lock/unlock' tab has broken off somewhere.
Would like to transfer photo's to memory stick, what's the chances of carefully taking card apart and installing innards in another case ?.
    Wishful thinking ?????

The chances of doing it are 100% . The success rate will probably be much lower;)

Just been flicking through the current issue of EOS Magazine and came across an article Protect & Recover relating to memory cards.

Under the heading Write Protect tabs it states .....

"If you accidentally insert a locked card into the camera you will not lose any images. You can still read the images from a locked card on your camera or download them to a computer. "

Have you tried this ? - can't imagine that it only applies to Canon.

Hi Spanner, I've just put a SD card in USB holder and tried it in comp with Lock switch in both positions and it will still read info to PC.

You should be able to Download to PC as suggested. Neil.
