Is there a way to get Windows 8 to open in "Desktop" instead of the "Start" screen without using outside software.

I really like Windows 8 and have set-up my desktop to look and feel just like my previous XP desktop. Even the "Start" screen, after removing unneeded tiles (which was most of them:), and adding a few new ones I did need, is serviceable. I must say that, with the help of the Windows BBSes, the transition from XP to Win 8 has been fast and smooth. TIA

I have been using ViStart 8 for a while and now there is a new version 8.1. It works without any problems and has many new extras. It is also freeware. I found it in one of those British Win 8 tips magazines. You can get it at lee-soft.com

    Hi Tony,

Thanks for the link. I set-up the Scheduled Task exactly as he showed it. It worked, except that first the Libraries window opened then the Desktop screen with the Libraries still on it. I had to delay then close the Libraries before proceeding. The whole process is much slower than booting directly to Start and hitting the Desktop tile. Well, it was worth a try and thanks.

Hi Dennis. Try downloading and running the program Skip Metro Suite. The program will allow the computer to boot directly to the desktop and you can also disable some of the hot corners if you wish.

Sorry, but ViStart is one of the worst. The worst that I have personally tested anyway.

You can configure Start8 to take you straight to the desktop when you sign in. You can also disable the hot corners and charms bar if you so desire.

    Arie,
When I first posted about ViStart I had asked for comments. Only one person responded and said they were happy with it. It does basically everything I need but if you can recommend a better freeware I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Mark
