I am using a Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router, model WNDR4500, and the power light blinks green.

I did attempt the the steps outlined by netgear genie faq and couldn't get the firmware to upgrade.

    Thank you for any advice.

You will have to reload/update the router firmware by using TFTP. This is a command line program and the commands are given at the page Arie linked to above.

Your computer may not have TFTP installed yet. To install it, go to Control Panel > Programs & Features > Add Windows components (or something like that) > select TFTP in the list and follow the prompts.

I couldn't find TFTP listed in Add/Remove Windows Components.

    1. You forgot the "put ".

    2. When a filename contains one or more spaces, (and a cmd isn't working), try enclosing the filename in between double-quotes. For example:

      "WNDR4 500-V1.0.1.20_1.0.40.zip "

    3. I doubt that the router knows how to unzip a zip file. I'd unzip it first and then try to "put" the unzipped file on the router.

You need to extract the files from the zip archive, the open a command prompt in that folder or cd to the folder. There will be a binary file there, probably a .bin file. This is the command: (IP address may be different)
    Code:
    tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT actual-filename.xxx
