(There's lots about W7 upgrades, but as far as I've searched, none related to my specific question.)

Can anyone point me to a legal source of a download or disk upgrade of Vista to Windows 7?

I'm looking to upgrade (not clean install, as I don't want to reinstall all apps) from Vista x64 Home Premium to W7 Pro or Ultimate. I'd prefer a software download, but will buy an install disk as long as it allows upgrade. I've had no luck at the MS store, all I get there are urgings to buy W8 clean install. The W7 install disks I've found at MS partner resellers all seem to allow clean install only, thought they're much less expensive than the product code I recently bought for another machine that had a pirated W7 installed by an unscrupulous technician.

If it's not possible to do a Vista > W7 upgrade rather than full install, it would be helpful to know that. Any help would be appreciated. - edo

Have you run THIS program to see if your PC will work?

Any Windows 7 disk (retail, not OEM) will include the option to do an upgrade. You just need to buy the correct key to save some $$.

Frist, run the upgrade advisor MrBill linked to.

Amazon sells the upgrade to Windows 7 Professional for $134.96 and the upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate for $173.01

Thanks, Arie. But what does "buy the correct key mean? Don't I get the upgrade key when I buy the upgrade version?

Yeah, guys, ran the advisor ages ago. - edo

Thanks all, this conversation and Arie's outline of the differences between the W7 editions have been very helpful. I see that what I need is the W7 Premium software, as all I want to do is an upgrade from Vista Premium, without the bother of reinstalling all of my apps. Actually I'm quite happy with Vista, I can even see myself going back to it after I see what W7 has to offer. The only inconveniences I've had with Vista in four years is that running processes, particularly sapisvr (Windows Speech Recognition), sometimes get hung up in memory after I close the app. And WSR sometimes gets a little confused when I'm running it over lot of another apps, which I think has to more do with the 4 GB memory limit of my mainboard and my 2.5 GHz CPU than with the OS. In any case I'm curious to see if W7 handles memory and processes better than Vista does, and the Premium upgrade will be fine for that. I did get a copy of W7 from missionsoft for $59.00, free shipping, will see how it works out.

Can you post a link to this missionsoft. I googled it and came up with nothing about them selling Windows unless I missed it.

OK, the S made the difference. They don't have a great but not a really bad rating from WOT. Looks OK to me though.

Yeah, I was a little concerned, but I spoke to them over the phone when I was still unsure that I was getting the edition I needed, and they seemed knowledgeable & responsible. They did send me receipts promptly. I'm a little worried about getting disks via USPS in paper sleeves, but that's worked before. I'm partial to cut-rate supplies, as long as they're legal. WOT (to which I haven't subscribed) was the only one of the reviewing sites I checked which cautioned against them.

I read some mixed reviews on ResellerRatings

They are selling OEM software, so you need to be careful what you buy. If you buy retail, you are also entitled to use it if you ever (need) to change your hardware.
