For several weeks now, my Windows Update has been failing to install the file "KB2761465." The system tries, and fails, to install it every night. No luck. I also can no longer open IE, but that's another problem which is beyond me.

Per an online suggestion, I manually downloaded the KB2761465 file from the MS Support site and attempted to install it manually. Then the system told me that This update does not apply to my system.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

What version of IE are you using?

This security update is rated Critical for Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10 on Windows clients and Moderate for Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10 on Windows servers. This security update has no severity rating for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8. My IE (when it worked) was version 8. During my experimentation to reinstall it, since IE had stopped working last week, I attempted to install IE9. That did not work, however. Right now, I have NO IE. but I would still like to get Windows Update to operate.

Go to Control Panel/Add or Remove programs and click on it and uninstall it. I should revert back to the last version. Then see if you can update from there.

I went to the list of installed programs from Control Panel, but IE no longer appears on the list.

Hi Greg, What do you see if you click Start > All Programs?
    Is Internet Explorer listed?

If you right click on it - you can Delete if you want to.

    Properties will show File Location.

I had 7 Updates install on the 12/12/12 which included KB2761465.

Start > Control Panel > Programs & Features > View installed updates (top left hand pane) and see if the KB276465 was entered as Failed. Neil.

Neil- thanks for the tips, but both suggestions fail to give positive results here. I will keep searching-

Hi Greg, What Browser are you using if IE is not working?
What happens when you Start > All Programs > Windows Update? Neil.

Here's a link that might help: What to do if IE stops responding

    Neil,
When I run Windows Update, it shows me a list of saved updates waiting to be installed-- in this case, just one. When I try to install it, it fails.
BTW, I always use Firefox for my regular browsing. The only reason I care about IE is that my Quicken pgm depends on IE to transmit electronic payments.
In other news, I am abandoning this headache and will shortly install Win.7 Home Premium, in place of Vista Home Premium. with a whole new OS in place, I expect things will work better. I've had the machine 3.5 years and never replaced the OS yet.

    Greg
