    SpyBot user tip....

i was thinking that a "Check all" or "Fix all" button would be nice in the "Check for problems" field, for those of us who usually let SB fix everything it finds.

without such a feature, it is necessary to physically check each item that you want SB to fix.

in searching the SB forum recently, i came across a post from the program's author, Patrick M. Kolla. on this topic, he says...

"a little hint: go to the settings page, scroll to the bottom, and enable the 'Show expert buttons' options "

just what i was looking for!! now i've got a 'Select all items' choice!

    :)

Thanks for the info Mr. Mark I may need that one day.

I have a tip also. If you run SpyBot Resident Protection and have a problem with it crashing every time it detects a registry change, go to the SpyBot directory and delete the Resident.log. That log seems to get corrupt from time to time, don't know why, but dumping it gives you a new leash. Maybe I'm the only one that has this problem. I'd like to hear if anyone else has experienced it.

    Cheers. :)

you're welcome for the tip. i get a lot of help here on this forum, so the least i can do is give a little back when i have something. :)

could you elaborate on SpyBot Resident Protection? is that an automation setting? or is it the non-default selection for "integrated search for registry inconsistencies "?

i don't have a resident log, probably because i don't have resident protection?

but your mentioning of logs reminded me to go into the SpyBot folder and erase the recovery folder and the log folder, which is just good basic periodic maintenance.

    :)

I think I got the Resident program at the same time I downloaded the main one but can't clearly remember. I do remember having to elect to install it separately.

At any rate, you can get it here . It amounts to a tiny program that you can either run on demand or else place in your Start-Up folder, that will detect any changes being attempted on your Registry, such as would happen when some malware tried to place a Run command to allow it to call home.

With it in force, I find that when I open MsWorks, I get a warning that it want to add a Call line to the Run folder of the Registry allowing it to check for Updates on next Start-Up.

Then it often triggers during installing software that need to write to the Registry. I like to monitor such things just so I can have an idea what's going on in the system.

PMK's words "very early alpha stage " kinda make me uneasy...

i think i'll hold off on that program. i seem to have my hands full with the so-called tried and tested stuff.

I checked the link I posted and it didn't list the direct download link so here it is.

Yeah, it's beta but I have used it for three months or so and haven't had any real problems other than the minor glitch I mentioned. I think several other members here also have it since that's how I came to get it. Actually the entire SpyBot program is beta. The final decision is yours though.

    Cheers. :)
