I leave my laptop on when I go to bed. The last few days it has starting shutting off. When I wake up I have to hit the power button and log in each morning. I have checked the settings and I do not have it set to shut off. I am running windows 7. Its ok that this happens but I would like to know why?? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Are you sure that the laptop is shutting down and not sleeping or hibernating? Is the power light on when you awake in the morning?

If it really is shutting down it could be due to overheating - check the cooling exhaust vents for blockages. Is there a good flow of air around the fan intake where you leave it overnight ? - flat surface should be no problem, but if you leave on the bed or other soft surface cooling flow may be affected.

There is good air flow. I also have sitting it on a cooling pad since the day I bought it. Now in the last week it has started shutting off during the night. It stays on all day long approximately 8 a.m to 11 p.m. then sometime after 11 p.m. it shuts off. Yes the power button is off and it has to be restarted. It is not hybernating. Anyone have any ideas??

When left overnight is the laptop on battery or mains power?

Check Event Viewer for any clues.

Look in Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 6008 (unexpected shutdown events). Event ID 1074 (power off (shutdown) and restart type events).

    Still no luck

Thank you for the advice but still no luck. Arie.. I did what you suggested Look in Windows Logs > System and look for Event ID 6008 (unexpected shutdown events). Event ID 1074 (power off (shutdown) and restart type events).
There was not any Event ID 6008 listed :(. I know last night it shut off between 12:40 and 7:30 this morning. Also to those that asked it is on electricity not battery. This has all started in the last couple weeks. Its frustrating.

    What about Event ID 1074?

You can also try this: Download & install Speccy (uncheck the option to install Google Toolbar during installation).

Next go to Operating System and list the details under Power Profile and Scheduler

It is not sleeping it is shutting off. I used to be able to simply touch the touchpad or a key and I could wake it. Now I have to actually hit the power button. Also as I stated earlier it does not do it when it has been left alone all day. It only happens at night. Almost as if it is set at a certain time of night to shut off. Has me totally perplexed.

Well, that's how Windows 7 works. Same for my 2007 Dell Latitude.

Set it not to sleep when on AC power and you could have the solution.

Sometimes this can also be caused by BIOS sleep settings. Could be an ACPI Bios or Driver problem (make sure you'll have the latest BIOS & update your drivers).

Thank you Arie for all your help! I did not realize that it had been taken off never and set to 180 minutes. I reset it yesterday and it stayed on all night. I just wanted to thank you for your patience and all your help :)
