I just got this Acer Aspire 7740-5691 running windows 7 Home Prem. version. I just cannot get the HDMI port to work. When checking in device manager in control panel, it says hardware is working properly, however, it is not. I have tried updating the drivers buy going to Intel site and after it checks the computer it says drivers are current. Nowhere in device manager says anything about HDMI, it should be showing up in sound video and games controller but it is not. The display adapter is Intel (R) HD Graphics. I think I am at a dead end right now. If someone is familiar with this model laptop perhaps they could give me some insight of what I am doing wrong.

Well what exactly are you aiming to do? How have you tried to use the hdmi port?

In device mgr you may only see something like "High definition audio device ", that's all.

The hdmi port on that computer is used to connect another monitor, hd tv, etc.

I don't think so. HDMI is not a game controller by any means. And while HDMI supports sound, in computers it is primarily a means to display digital graphics. It typically appears under "Display Adapters ".

Sound via HDMI on computers is only supported if the graphics card supports sound via HDMI. Not all do.

Unfortunately, and typical of Acer, their on-line documentation is sadly lacking. I cannot find a manual specific to your model. Instead, all I can find is a "generic " manual that says next to nothing about HDMI. :(

I agree with Tony. We need more information. How are you displaying graphics now?

Thanks to Tony and Bill for your replies. I used the HDMI before connecting it to my tv set and it worked. After the computer started slowing down I cleaned out the registry and it is a lot faster but now the HDMI does not work. I don't know if that (cleaning the registry) had anything to do with it.

Well note a TV is not the same thing as a computer monitor. Does your computer monitor have built in speakers?

I personally like and use CCleaner's Registry cleaner, but a Registry cleaner should never be used to fix a broken computer. If it worked before the cleaning then I hope you backed up the Registry before using the cleaner and recommend you restore that backup.

Most people will agree (including me) that messing with the registry will more often than not, cause problems. The registry cleaning will not speed up the PC or if it does, you probably can't see the difference with the human eye. Best to leave that alone as you have found out. Did you make a backup of the registry before you started cleaning it up? If so, restore it and you should be good.

I loaded the back of the registry and nothing happened, I still cannot use the HDMI with the TV set. Someone told me it could be the port itself that has gone wrong and had nothing to do with the cleaning of the registry. The connection to the motherboard could be severed and need resoldering. If that is the case I will rather leave things as is, and move on. This is not the original main board. The original one went bad at the power input where the battery charger connects to. I bought a new board and installed it, it has been working fine for over a year, and then this happened. I will NOT buy another board for this laptop.
