Hello all! Merry Christmas. I have a new Sony Optiarc dvd rw that is giving me a hard time. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I use Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012. When I put a dvd into the drive it does not sense it is in there. It will just sit and shuttle back and forth untill it finally reads that the dvd is in there. It can sometimes take a half hour to read. This is my second unit with the same problem. I do get a message when I start the dvd rw (sometimes) that there was a problem installing the drive and it may not work properly. My os is XP-SP3. Any ideas anyone?

If you notice I said this is my second unit. It does exactly the same thing as the other one did. Of course that doesn't mean their not all defective.

Well I tried a different brand. Much better rated one and I still have the same problem. Is it true usb devices do not require seperate drivers?

Someone will correct me if i'm wrong but in my experiance most seperate devices use generic drivers, but some use specialised ones which windows update downloads or can be downloaded from the manafacturers website.

Internal or external drive? As you mention USB I suspect external?

Yes it is an internal drive so is the new brand I tried. That doesn't mean it can't be used externally when it does not fit internally. The sony model # is AD7280S. The other brand is Asus DRW24B1ST.

Yes I have tried it on another cp. Same issue. So I am guessing it is something with the drives themselves. Could they not be communicating with the cp? They show up in the device manager on the cp.

Both those drives are internal SATA drives and according to the specs of your computer the drive connections are PATA (IDE) so neither of those drives will connect to your motherboard.
So how are you connecting the drive?

SATA to IDE to USB adapter.

I would hazard a guess that that is where the trouble lies and wonder why you opted for an internal drive rather than a straight USB external.

You haven't mentioned if the problem is confined to DVD's - will the drive read data/audio CD's?

I originally thought I could put it in my pcput they don't fit the case. Also the price was much better then external.

It did work. I have recorded about 20 dvds and one or two cds but most of the time it took a long time to read the dvd. Sometimes it worked right away. No it is not confined to dvd.
