I have several software titles on my desktop, each show a blank white coloured symbol, with name of software printed below. Can I download from the Web pre figured icons? allowing me to instal an appropriate icon to each present white icons. I have searched the Web for a suitable source without any success. Assistance to obtain a reliable source will be much appreciated.

Assuming that you have Windows 7.

    First Rebuild the Icon Cache.
If the above doesn't straighten up all the Icons then clear and reset Thumbnail Cache.

Flatiron2, thank you for prompt response. I am looking for software that gives a large selection of various themed "Icons" to download and enable me to choose the most appropriate icon, then change current installed application icon. Icons in questions are not related to windows 7, rather other software writers.
Some years ago, I did have such software that could change the theme to already installed software icons, unfortunately I no longer have this software available.

    Sorry, misread your post.

I've never tried other Icons or Themes myself, so can't suggest any one particular site.

I have seen deviantART mentioned on another board though.

Any Desktop shortcut icon can be changed by rt click > Properties > Change icon button > Browse and select the downloaded .ico file or dll/exe that holds icons. Windows system icons such as User, Computer, Network, Recycler must be changed using themes.

TonyT, thank you for response. Unfortunately, icon to be changed, shows no other icons other than current icon. I was hoping to download and instal a selection of suitable icons from a Web site, and make available in my computer for further use.

I can only apologise. WOT shows it as an excellent site.

I'll remove the link in the mean time but can I ask what anti-malware you're using that flags this up as malicious?

EDIT: After further research I've put the link back up, although I'm still curious as to why your software flagged it as malicious.

Wildfire: software is MalwareBytes Pro. It can only be a coincidence, but all my desktop icons have all reverted to showing the arrows beneath all desktop icons on my monitor screen. I have now lost the program that removed the arrows from desktop icons, and after all is only a cosmetic exercise. Regards.

Is there no Browse... button that opens the Find files dialog?

Windows icons are stored in these files:

    shell32.dll (Most icons in here)
explorer.exe (My Computer, ZIP Files etc.)
    shdoclc.dll (IE Icon)
xpsp2res.dll (Wireless Networking, Service Pack 2 Shields, Bluetooth etc.)
    mydocs.dll (My Documents, My Pictures)
    netshell.dll (Various network icons)
    shimgvw.dll (various image file icons)
    mstask.dll (Scheduled Tasks icons)
    wiashext.dll (Scanners & Cameras icons)
    audiodev.dll (Portable Media Devices icons)

Wildfire, tried out your suggestion, this caused a degree of hair pulling!!!
Finally managed to download two versions of FXvisor 32 & 64 bit.
FXvisor 64bit would not instal : "a network error occurred while attempting to read ". Further displayed modify or repair, and not instal. I then tried the FXvisor 32 bit version, this installed properly, then without further prompt removed icons arrows. My OS is Windows 7 64bit version. Back to normal now, regards.
