STOPPING ANNOYING POPUPS without losing URL Links!

I read the following advice (for W2K pro):

"If you go to "My Computer "> "Control Panel "> "Add/Remove Programs "> "Windows Setup "> "System Tools ">Right Click Once>Click on Details.Untick "Winpopup.
Since I have done this I have not had a "Windows Popup Ad ".

    Questions:
    Can anyone confirm?
Do you lose any other functions?

It sort of sounds too simple to be true! Who needs all those programs & proxy's?

velvi--Sounds great!! But I have had that setting checked since I installed Win98. I have no clue what it does. And I know it does not stop pop-ups for me, and the only way I get pop-ups to pop-under is to put each specific bad site's URL into IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Restricted Sites.
There are also lots of third party programs which claim to eliminate pop-ups entirely. I have never used them, but I am sure other will tell you about them.

    Thanks for your reply.
HOWEVER the advice was to UNCHECK (disable) that setting.
If you have any further ideas please let me know.

The WinPopup utility is available in all Windows network client operating systems such as Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and Windows 3.1 for sending popup messages among computers in the network.

It doesn't have anything to do with pop-up ads.

velvi--Sorry I misread your question! But glad you posted, because now we both have learned what Windows Pop-Up does!
And for making pop-ups into pop-unders without adding any more programs to your PC, remember about putting pop-up sites into your IE Tools|Internet Options|Security|Restricted zone.
