I have a Toshiba L850 with windows 7 pro, on startup I get the wifi icon in top right of screen, I have wifi disabled. This Icon does not show up on my older Toshiba laptop running windows 7 Pro. It appears to me that the startup is quite slow on the L850 and as I have an I7 chipset, I cannot understand why this is so. I know the screen hangs on the startup when the wifi icon comes up, this is evident for around 30 seconds, and I believe this is one of the reasons my bootup is so slow. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Hi Exfso. This wifi icon that comes up is it the Windows Network icon that comes up in the system tray when you boot up or is it something else?

If its a wifi manager that was installed with the wifi drivers then you can probably disable it without any adverse effects.

I would start with performing a clean boot in Windows 7 and see if that improves the startup time of the machine. Take a look here, How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

    Wifi Icon

Thanks for the reply, the icon is not in the tray, but shows on the desktop when the computer is booting up and is located in the top right of the display. Once the bootup is completed the icon disappears.

So does performing a clean boot help with the performance of the system?

I have not done the clean boot up yet, but have got some more speed by disabling the facial recognition software that was installed by Toshiba. It has lessened the time by around 20 seconds. Currently my computer shop has the laptop, they are installing another 8gb of ram, so I have not had a chance to do the clean boot as yet.
I must admit that I am really confused as to why there is that crazy wifi icon keeps coming up on the desktop when I boot up.

On my Toshiba, there is small slider-switch on the front edge of the notebook where I can instantly enable/disable Wifi. In looking at the images for your notebook I don't see one, but it seems there should be something similar for security reasons - perhaps a Fn key combo. I might try disabling that and seeing what is happening.

I think that icon is put there by a program set to run when your notebook starts. So you may need to look at what starts with your computer, and then at what is running (in Task Manager) once booted.

Hi Bill, yeah there is a function setup which disables the wifi, but the icon is still present on bootup after it is disabled and appears to be responsible for the relatively slow boot times. I cannot see for the life of me why it should still show after the wifi has been disabled through the function key. My older Tosh laptop does have one of these slide switches on the front which disables the wifi. I agree it has to be something in the startup that is causing the slowdown, just a case of isolating the culprit.

Winpatrol - free version is good for showing startups and allowing you to disable them.
