Grandsons laptop with Vista on it. Had a Westel 7500 Modem/Router go bad on me. He could get on the Internet Wired or Wireless with this Westel. So could everybody else. They sent another one and it lasted 2 days. He and everybody else could get on wired or wireless after password was put in. They sent another one and everybody but his Compaq can get on wire or wireless. He can get on Wired but not Wireless. Password is right. I even changed the password and tried again. Still the same.
    Any suggestions?

This thread should moved to Networking, if there not a quick answer forthcoming.

Try looking in the modem's administrator webpage (get the modem's manual).

One thing you can do is put the computer's wireless MAC address in a list of "trusted" computers.

    Another suggestion...

When trying to connect, go to Network and Sharing Center (Control Panel). At the top of the box depicting the network, click on the red cross for connecting to the internet and see if the network troubleshooting wizard will fix the problem.

Took the PC up to my son's house. Same Westell. Put the password in and got right on the network. Could not get on line with IE or any programs. He had Malware on it a while back. Got it cleared and everything was fine till the routers went bonkers. Probably going to do a clean install and go from there.

Yes, malware might be cause. It could be something like have a proxy server setting or having a set IP address for one of the previous modem/routers.

If you get no other suggestions, a (slightly) radical reset is to go to Device Manager and uninstall all the listings under Network Adapters. They should be automatically reinstalled when you reboot, unless the drivers, say, might need upgrading. If you have trouble, download new networking drivers from the Compaq/HP website using another computer and transfer them with a memory stick.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers will make new networking settings, those "default" settings should be the same as any other computer.

Done that already. No change. Even tried an external USB adapter and no go.

Whiped the drive clean. Installed all the updates to Vista via ethernet cable and still could not get it to accept the password. I had an external USB adapter and put the disk in and then the adapter when it said to. It took the password with no problem. I guess that the internal WIFI bit the dust even though it shows that it is on.
