    Hello Everyone,

I have recently bought a Lenovo laptop with W 7, 64 bit, home premium installed.

I have set my Windows updates configuration at - "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them."

However, when I log off, I frequently get the message - don't shut down, etc, as windows is installing 1 of "X" number of updates.

Why would this happen when I wish to know whether I want the updates or not and whether to instal them or not? and how can I change this strange "take over "?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Try the other option-> CHECK for updates and let me decide.

Hi colinito. You can also click Start< All Programs< Windows Update and see which updates you want installed. Then you can uncheck whatever updates you do not want installed and even hide certain updates if you don't want them offered to you again.

Steve R Jones, & Evan Omo, Thank you. I realise this, and I may try this too, I don't have much faith in it's success though, since the other method failed, so why should another unrequired choice work - my question was based on the failure of my original choice - where I had configured the Windows Update programme to notify me of the updates that had been downloaded so that I could then choose whether to install them or not. It fails to do this.

    Regards,
    Colinito

Microsoft has been very aggressive with distributing Windows Updates and it appears that there is not much you can do with changing the Windows Update setting to Notify Me but let me choose when to install Windows Updates. Microsoft will download the updates onto your machine anyway.

I normally just visit the Windows Update window and hide the updates that I don't want installed. Thats the workaround that I use.

    Thank you!
Obviously this is the way forward. A shame that the "options" offered by Microsoft are not worth a jot! Makes me wonder why they would even bother to have the option in black and white.
I am usually disappointed by the attitude of Microsoft towards purchasers of their goods. I have never bought a Windows programme, they have always been already installed on the equipment that I have bought. Of course, as we all know, this precludes the purchaser from contacting Microsoft for any assistance - a typical move, sell it and having sold it, the person it is sold to is then responsible for ironing out any subsequent problems!

Once again, thanks for the advice, I shall mark the thread as solved - (and probably go and research the price of Linux!!!)

    Regards,
