video icon previews

    Hi, I was wondering if there was someway to make windows 7 show a proper preview of the videos instead of just the first second? Windows XP and every version of linux I've used, shows like a 5 or 10 second into the video for the thumbnail. I'm rather puzzled on this. Useful thumbs really help me remember whats what and what I've already seen.

    I don't think this is possible without a 3rd party application.

    why would I need a 3rd party app when both computers have the same file type set to vlc player and yet, one has proper thumbs and the other don't?

    Here's what my windows xp box does.
