Having problems with a customer. Using Windows XP Home Edition. Setup with 2 users, husband and wife. When husband is logged on the keyboard works fine. When wife is logged on keyboard is frozen. Clicks on any key press. Doesn't work with any programs.

    Standard PS/2 keyboard.
    No known viruses.
    No driver or resource conflict.
    No other hardware issues.

Interesting problem and one I've not heard of before. Thanks for posting it. Certainly not any easy answer to search up. Technet or Online Support or Google.

Are they using "fast user switching "? If so, does it happen when he starts the PC and then a switch to her logon? How about if she logs on first after a reboot?

New problem or has it happened since the initial build?

    SP1?

Possible - a bad registry entry. Compare the HKCU/Keyboard layout entries for the two users to the HKusers keyboard layout and see if she is getting some strange keys or values when she is logged on. There may be some other reg areas that need examination - maybe something specific to her account but I can't think of any right now.

Create a new user account for her and see if the problem persists with that logon.

Thanks for taking a look. Fast switching is on. It doesn't matter who I select after boot. Tried both ways. Keyboard just locks up when her profile is selected.

This all started since their hard drive crashed. Had to replace it and reloaded their sony system recovery info. It was a few days after that they called me again and found the problem. Supposedly all they loaded was AOL and a printer driver since.

I did compare the keyboard layout info, driver info, and resources being used for both identities and they're the same.

Puzzling, and can't get anywhere with Microsoft.

Did you try adding a 3rd user account and see how it works?

I you are using Fast Switching, what happens if you do a full logoff instead of just switching.

Also what happens if you turn off fast switching.
