My daughter dropped her laptop from about 3 feet onto the carpet and stopped working.
I think it has something to do with the power supply because the dvd tray does not open when plugged in. Is there some way for a novice to check for other causes and if it is the power supply, is it easy to repair?

If the laptop was booted up at the time there is a strong possibility that the hard drive has been damaged beyond repair by the heads colliding with the platter (disk).

When you attempt to boot do any of the lights come on - there should be power in the battery.

It was already shut down, but I don't know yet if the HD was still turning when it dropped.
Only when I push the start button will the light come on but does not start.
I forgot to mention that the dvd drive does not open either when plugged in.

I'm afraid that there is very little you can do to resolve this problem - clearly some internal damage has occurred, but to what is anybody's guess. There is power available by the looks of it.

Impossible to say if damage to something other than the hard drive or to the hard drive itself is preventing the laptop from booting.

If the DVD drive is external there won't be any power to the USB port until the computer is booted up AFAIK.

Looks like a trip to the local computer shop, but whether or not it can be fixed remains open to question.

Just sorry that I could not strike a more encouraging note.

I do not know for sure, like Pete mentioned, it could be other internal damage. My daughter said that she is probably going to junk it. The last time she had it fixed it cost $260 or so, to repair and that was just for replacing the HD and re-install of the OS.
