I needed some more wired ports on the network and had a Netgear WNR1000 laying around, so I hooked it up behind my Westell wireless Modem/router (from Verizon, for my DSL). It works fine and solved my immediate issue, however I don't want the wireless broadcasting from it and competing with the Westell. If you are wondering why I did this, it's because this is the 'free' option - like I said it was laying around and I hate to waste it or spend for something else.

I haven't yet been able to log in to using www.routerlogin.net / www.routerlogin.com or ping it because it just goes to the Westell everytime.

Anybody know if the wireless can be turned off and how I would do it?

Hi Blueberry. Take a look here, Netgear WNR1000: wireless settings guide.

In the above link, scroll down to Advanced Wireless Settings and disable the wireless router radio.

If you can't connect to the router using the routerlogin URL, see if you can access the router settings by using http://192.168.1.1.

Yes, sorry I should have posted that - when I try 192.168.1.1 it just takes me to the Westell setup screen. Any way to get past that?

Take the Westell out of the loop. That is what it is looking for as it is the first choice to do anything. Put the Netgear in there only.

    1. connect directly to the netgear.
    2. login using its ip address or www.routerlogin.net
    3. change the ip address to 192.168.1.2
    4. re-login using the new ip address
    5. disable the wifi
    6. disable the netgear dhcp
    7. set it's gateway to 192.168.1.1
    8. set it's dns to 192.168.1.1
    9. connect the netgear to the westell

you'll now have a managed switch.

I agree with Bill. Disconnect your machine from the Westell router, hook up the Netgear router and then your machine should be able to access the Netgear router settings so you can disable the wifi of the Netgear router.
