Fairly new computer by HP (Pavillion) with XP HE. HP will not reply any longer to my requests for help. Not impressed with them at all.
At seemingly random times I hear through the speakers the sound of a cricket (Cheep-cheep-cheep). He is an active little guy sometimes, going on at length for an hour or more, and when he is tired he only chirps every 10 minutes.
Any suggestions as to what I might look at to fix this? Tried spraying the inside of the computer with RAID to no effect (just kidding).
    Thanks in advance, G

Update your drivers from the manufactures site of your card not the HP site. See how that goes, i've had a simular problem like that before but no crickets :p just a dull shhh-crack.

    Cheers

Does Jiminy only sing at a certain time - for example, when the mouse is in motion?

The sound is random, it does it when there is nobody in the room, and the computer is not on line.
The computer is from HP, how do I find out the video or sound manufacturer to start getting drivers? Is it available in the system details or must I open up the case and look?

"...The sound is random, it does it when there is nobody in the room, and the computer is not on line. "

Is this the only time it does it (while unattended)? If so, are you using a screensaver? If so, does it have any sounds associated with it (or could someone have assigned a sound to it)?

If it's electrical or electromagnetic interference, I've resolved that problem by first making sure the speakers are at least 6 inches away from the monitor. Then, second, if the speakers have a volume control on them, turn that down and then adjust the volume through the volume control on the taskbar.

Finally, it's possible somebody put a prank program on the machine...one that merely plays an annoying sound at random. Got a practical joker in your house? ;)

You don't by chance have a weather app. installed called WeatherBug do you? That's it way of informing you of weather warnings, alerts, etc..
Just a shot in the dark, but that is exactly the way it alerts you. Cricket sounds.:D

Yep, I have Weatherbug and the sounds were enabled. I have selected the sounds off, and I hope that is the end of it. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Ah, now I see the connection. Over here we have an expression that is similar and has somewhat the same meaning: That guy/gal is a pistol! Now my computer knowlege is just about as described in my signature but as to a sense of humor - Well, I keep trying!:D
Oh yeah, as I said, a shot in the dark, several years ago my brother acquired Weatherbug and his puzzlement was quite similar to cisux's so it rang a bell right off.:)
