I've never had this problem until my computer became somewhat unstable, and I replaced the memory yesterday. When running a mem/test the results showed bad memory so I replaced the 2 gig stick of ram, and after doing so the computer no longer recognizes the Olympus camera I use. It will make the connection sound of new hardware found, but does not show up in the device manager. Before it has always opened up immediately a program on the screen allowing me to perform whatever actions needed to manage the photos, it now opens a screen with one folder showing and nothing I can find of relevance inside. I am running Window XP Pro,
with Firefox. Any help I can get with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Reid

Hi, Is camera shown in Device Manager?
Do you see the software in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs?

I would check and un-install drivers and software - reboot PC and re-install camera software and drivers.

Hope you have the CD that came with your camera. Neil.

No, the camera is nowhere to be found in the device manager or anywhere else, it makes the new-found hardware alert tone when attached, but the computer does not recognize the camera. This just happened after I installed the new ram, which makes absolutely no sense as to why it quit working.

Does the USB port you are presumably using recognise other USB devices?

I suppose it does, when you plug into either of the ports I use for the camera it gives the alert sound which is suppose to mean it knows a device has come on board. I will move to another port just to check.

I just check the port with a wireless mouse and it is working. I plugged the camera into the port an it gives the alarm as if it knows the camera it now attached, there is a screen that opens showing a folder which is named DCIM , and when you open the folder it says 100OLYMP, but the folder is empty. The camera is an Olympus, but this is not understandable to me, it worked perfectly until the only change was made when replacing the one stick of ram, and everything else on the computer seems to be working perfectly with the new memory.

The directory structure you see is correct and any images on the card should be in that folder - are you sure that there are images there?

Can you read the SD/CF card in a card reader?

Before there was a screen that would open allowing me to name the photos and send them to a location of my choosing, such as documents. I now get nothing, it does not ask it I want to download the pictures, so I no there is nothing in the folder.

The computer is recognising the camera as an external drive and showing the contents of the card. So, I ask the question again - do you know that there are images on the card ? Can you view them on the camera back?

It may be that the software will not initiate if there are no images on the card - I am not familiar with Olympus as I use Canon - and transfer all my images to the computer using a card reader, so much quicker!

This issue may be pure coincidence in that it arose when you upped the RAM.

If there are images on the card have you tried reinstalling the software as suggested by retiredlearner?

I've got to be the stupidest person that ever walked. I took two pictures a couple of days ago, have no idea where they so strangely disappeared to, but when you made the one statement I highlighted, it rang a bell in my thick skull.

I thought to myself, I know I took a couple of pictures because when I tried to load them into the computer is when I could not get my normal screen to open. I put together (even when knowing this cannot cause the problem I was seeing) that I messed up something when changing the ram, so immediately I started looking for a unrealistic problem.

I just now looked in the camera and there are no images, where they went is beyond me, and I've done this hundreds of times, so it's not something new, but something crazy.

Thank you very much for jogging my failing memory. I took another picture and it open my normal screen immediately (working perfectly), now if I knew what happened to the first two pictures that caused this mental failure, I would be happy.

Very pleased to hear that you have resolved the problem :) So easy to associate a problem with a recent action and overlook the obvious - we all do it from time to time :D

Possibly you have a problem with the card in the camera, but if you see the image on the camera back after pressing the shutter button then the image has been recorded on the card.

Hi puppypaws, Have you had a look in Windows Explorer for the images? Neil.
