I originally was getting the error message about a corrupt or missing ntfs.sys file so the computer wouldn't load Windows. I was able to look up on the internet on another computer and figured out how to copy the file off the CD: recovery disk into the computer's hard drive.

I think I made a mistake though because right before that I typed the following command while in Windows repair mode: fixboot and entered y at the prompt was I sure?.

Now the system go to boot up and I will see a flash of the typical Microsoft splash page and then a flash of a blue screen and then the computer reboots.

When I entered chkdsk /p it reflected a one or more errors on the volume.

I am in WAY over my head. Any help for the idiot?

If I try the command fixmbr I get a message that this computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record...fixmbr may damage your partition tables if you proceed...could cause all partitions to become inaccessible....

I did the Toshiba hard disk self test and the quick result was failed... reason 7 read element of the test failed

    Hi JETS.

This to me means that the harddrive has probably failed.

This is definitely not a good sign.

Disable the automatic restart on system failure so you can view the BSOD in Windows XP, Disable Automatic Restart From the Advanced Boot Options Menu.

I know that the article applies to Windows 7 but you can do the same procedure in Windows XP.

Thanks Evan Omo - I wasn't able to access the Disable.... option.
The safemode options are 1/3 of the Windows 7 options.

I did go into the bios set up utility > diagnostic log > and it shows:
Result - Failed - Replace Hard Disk (10008)

Is there another way to disable the auto restart?

If you tried pressing F8 on startup to show the advanced boot options menu but you can't disable system restart on system failure because it isn't listed then I would not know why that is not the case. That option should show up on your Windows XP system if you press F8 on startup. See my screenshot below.

The fact that your BIOS is telling you that you need to replace your harddrive, I think its pretty clear that you need to get your harddrive replaced.

I saw in the log that supposedly the same error message is recorded from January this year but I don't remember such an event. And I have been using the computer just about every day.

Would there be any harm in trying to reinstall Windows XP on the same partition? I am getting a message that in essence is saying - are you really sure you want to do that?

Can I copy my documents from the computer to a jump drive while in repair mode?
I keep getting an error message that COPY does not allow wildcards. ???

You can attempt it if you wish. But I would take out the harddrive and hook it up into another computer as a slave drive so you can get any data off the harddrive while it is still working.

IMO I would back up any data on the drive, buy a new harddrive and perform a clean install of Windows XP. I know that sounds like a pain to do but thats what you have to do if your hardware components begin to fail.

Thanks. I will have to do some research because this puts me in an area I have not worked.
Do you have a link handy for doing what you suggest?
Maybe I'll see how much HP will charge me to do this.
