My new laptop has no old-style telephone phone line port.

If I am in a place that has no wifi, how can I connect to the internet?

I have a network LAN port and USB ports and HDMI and eSATA ports but not telephone ports

Will this be a problem in some places on the road?

Do I need a new piece of hardware?

telephone port = dial up that no one uses
wifi = wireless internet that your machine probably has and should work anywhere

Like LPT parallel printer ports, COM serial ports, floppy drives and IDE devices, RJ11 telephone jacks are old, slow, inefficient technology.

If you 'gotta have one' though, you can still get external USB 56K Fax/Modems for $18.99 (USD) [including shipping] at Newegg.

How about a mobile USB dongle ? That should work wherever there is mobile data service.

I was talking about wireless mobile dongles & not external modems.

Does this have any advantages over the wifi capacity I already have in my laptop?

Wifi & mobile data networks are 2 different things.

Wifi is normally available in very limited range [typically within an office, home or cafe] & may involve passwords.
Mobile data network can be accessed almost anywhere. You pay according to your plan & the speeds may range from good to pathetic. Good for emergency access.

All these are maximum theoretical speeds. Actual speed are much lower, specially in the case of wifi.

In case of wifi, the connected speed may be great but the internet speed can vary greatly depending on the internet connection.

And SpywareDr, you are again confusing dialup through telephone line and mobile data networks. Mobile data networks come in many flavours like 2g,3g & now even 4g with different capabilities.

I think these answers clarify the issue a lot.

Wifi is ubiquitous but locally tethered.

    dsl (phone jack) is obsolete

dongle can be faster and mobile but expensive.

Of course. But even if you divide those speeds in half you still have almost 1,000 times faster.

Yep, similar to dialup speeds being effected by noise on the line.

No, I know the difference. (I have both a Samsung tab and cellphone that run on 4G). The reason I keep referring to "dialup" is because dispatch trophy's first sentence in this thread was "My new laptop has no old-style telephone phone line port. " Which I took to mean a RJ11 jack for an internal dialup modem.
