My PC has a dual boot set up with Win 7 & XP Pro as the main operating systems. Currently I don't use Win 7, I'm more familiar and comfortable using XP Pro. The partition on which Win 7 in installed is too large and I would like to reduce the size of the partition on which it is sitting and allocate the extra space to the XP Pro partition. My question is; can it be done from within Win 7 or should I use a separate software program ie Partition Magic or one of the other propriety programs considered OK for the job?

    Thanks in advance

You should be able to shrink the Windows 7 partition using its Disk Mgmt, but I wouldn't do it. Resizing partitions is always risky using any software.

If you choose to do it, backup all your wanted data first, locate installation disks, drivers, etc. in the event you end up needing to start from scratch and re-partition the disk and install operating systems.

Easus makes a Free Edition that does what you want.

    Jim,

    http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/resize-boot-partition-2.htm
Free partition manager to resize/move FAT & NTFS hard disk partition, flash drive, memory card, etc.
Download the Free Edition (left side of the page).

Resize/Move partition function will help you:

Extend partition, especially extend system partition to maximize computer performance as well as better manage hard disk usage. By the way, you may find that there is a low disk space problem on a certain hard disk partition.
    Shrink partition for different usage.
Make the unallocated space behind the partition you want to extend by moving partition.
