Does or has anyone used SoftMaker FreeOffice?

If so, how does it compare with any of the other freeware office suites? I have been using (now Apache) OpenOffice for quite a few years now & I don't even have MS Office installed on any of my computers. I experimented with LibreOffice as a back-up but it is a bit buggy IMO so I don't use it now. I have the slightly outdated PortableApps OpenOffice 3.2 as a back-up but I was wondering about other freeware options.

Several years ago I used Textmaker (trial version), the word processor for this suite. I gave it up rather shortly thereafter, as its autocorrect didn't have nearly as many entries as Word did, and there wasn't a way at the time to use keyboard shortcuts for diacritical marks (such as the umlaut). Of course this was a few years ago, and this might have changed since then. Also, I realized that they were going to charge as much as a copy of Word/MS Office was going to cost me (used) on amazon, so I figured there was no use paying for it.

I have tried Abiword, Textmaker, OpenOffice, you name it..... and I've never found any word processor that remotely compares to Word, in terms of reliability and speed.

I am of the Google Docs or OpenOffice, except when it comes to something like school or work. The only reason I don't use them for those is because everyone still uses Word as a standard.

OK, thanks for the reply. I like AbiWord (portable & desktop) & have always found it useful. I'm not denying Word isn't good but I actually prefer 'Writer' (OpenOffice) & I've been using it for a long time.

This SoftMaker FreeOffice is the 2008 freeware edition I think. There is a vendor version more up to date.

I was primarily thinking about a freeware good back-up, especially for Impress (Powerpoint).

I use OpenOffice for work (I'm a lecturer) & it is used a fair amount in education. Mostly it is Word (MS Office) that is used however. I normally save OpenOffice (& AbiWord) files in a Microsoft format, so I rarely (if ever) have any compatibility issues. I also use Google Docs/Drive. FYI: Zoho Mail has something similar to Google Drive.

I find one of many, a perfect word processor and best of all it is free "LibreOffice 3.6.2. It is most reliable and for a home user, it does all I require.

Although I think that it is good to see forks of OpenOffice, I found LibO to be buggy & stopped using it. I also could not get the PortableApps version to run from a flashdrive, although I suspect a corrupted download mirror for that. I may try LibO again some day when the bugs in Impress have gone. I don't see any real improvement on OpenOffice to be honest. It's definitely one to keep an eye on though.

If you just tend to use a word processor & don't need anything else, I really recommend having a look at AbiWord.
