Sas numeric to character function

    I hope someone has experience with SAS. I am a new user and my learning curve is slow with this one. I have two data sets with ssn. One data set is reading the social security numbers as numeric (sero_fj)and the second data set is reading them as characters (both), so I can't merge the two files. I've tried converting sero_ftj ssns as numeric, but it is not working. Can anyone assist me with SAS.
