I've a D-Link dwl-2100ap and I'd like to connect it to a Pirelli modem-routeras as access point (operation mode= access point).

    Details:

    - I connected 2100ap to Pirelli through an ethernet cable
    - 2100ap has a dynamic ip provided by Pirelli's dhcp
    - Pirelli and D-Link 2100ap have same SSID, same encryption (wpa) and same pw but, probably, different channel (both on "auto channel scan ").

With a notebook on the wan I can ping the 2100ap, I can access to its setting pages but if I go close to it (far away from Pirelli) I don't see any network with the notebook; it seems like the D-Link doesn't work as access point.

    Am I missing something ?

    1. find out the LAN IP address of the modem/router. example: 192.168.1.1

    2. connect a comp to the dlink by wire > access its control panel via a browser > change its LAN IP address to a static address 192.168.1.2.

    3. in the dlink, set its gateway IP to 192.168.1.1 & its DNS IP to 192.168.1.1.

    4. change the dlink AP SSID to any DIFFERENT name than the modem/router SSID. (you'll have 2 separate wifi choices now) You can keep the same encryption & pass phrase in its security settings.

    5. set the dlink to channel 11 & disable its DHCP server.

    6. disconnect from the dlink and connect the dlink to the modem/router > do NOT use the dlink WAN/Internet port, connect using one of its LAN ports (dlink LAN port to modem/router LAN port)

    7. you'll now have a modem/router that handles all addressing and a dlink AP with a 3 port switch.

    8. connect to the modem/router control panel via a browser and set its wifi channel to 1. (least amount of interference and overlap between the two APs)

You cannot give each AP the same SSID UNLESS the dlink supports repeater mode or point to point mode. Best to avoid using those modes anyway, just have two separate APs using the same Internet connection.

Thanks TonyT, I'm looking forward to implementing your suggestions during the week-end. Of course I'll post back the outcome.

Just one point not fully clear to me:
After that I MUST exclude that ip address from the range of available addresses of dhcp server in the modem/router, correct ?

Most routers have a setting for the DHCP range. For example, Linksys routers' default is 192.158.1.100 - 253 for DHCP, so one would use 2-99 for static addresses.

If your modem/router's DHCP range is 2-x, set the dlink IP to one above x.

Above, I used 192.168.1.2 for the dlink, guessing that your modem/router uses DHCP addresses beginning with 192.168.1.100 & up.

    Won !!!!

With such a clear directions I couldn't fail !!! Compared to what I was doing was point 4. which made the difference.

    Thanks a LOT TonyT

PS I still have issues with the D-Link access point and I succeeded replacing it with a spare TP-Link access point I had. But it's a different story: I'll try to solve it, if I'll need further help I'll open a new thread
