I have used Microsoft's Plum High Colour for my chosen window colour for years. In going through my Control Panel, Desktop settings, In setting up my new computer with W7, I can't see it as a choice any more. I did, however find a custom colour shade choice. Am I going to have to engineer my own colour now?

    Thanks,

    Neo.

Try Control Panel/Personalization and near the bottom click on Window Color and see if that is what you want.

Not there Bill. With XP the change could be found under Control Panel/Display/Appearance tab/Color scheme. That doesn't seem to be available with W7.

Are you talking about the border around the window?

It is more than that Bill. Plum High colour makes the header of an active window blue and an inactive window a sort of taupe colour. It also tones the background down to a pale grey. It's must much easier on the eyes. With Windows 85, ME I think and XP, these preset colour choices were always available in the appearance tab of Display properties. Windows Standard, Windows Classic, Eggplant, Lilac, Maple, Wheat; these were all choices. I don't seem to be able to find them on W7.

There are several choices where I sent you. I change mine once in a while to confuse people that use my computer. :D

Right click on the desktop > Personalize and in the window which opens click on 'Get more themes online' and see if any meet your requirements.

    Or see here

To answer your original question. Yes, you're going to have to engineer your own color.

The good news is that once you've got it to your satisfaction, you can save it and not have to engineer it again.

First, If you want a solid-colored Desktop background, see the video, Windows 7 - How to Use a Solid Color for Your Desktop Background.

You can engineer your own custom windows colors, in Control Panel>Personalization>Window color, pick a color that's closest to the one you want to end up with, then click on the button to the left of "Show color mixer. "

Then you start adjusting the sliders for Hue, Saturation and Brightness. The changes will be immediately applied in real time so you can see the color of the windows and Desktop as you progress.

If you get to a point where you can't seem to get it right, just click the Cancel button, which will let you start over from the default color.

Once you've got what you want, click Save Changes.

I just figured it out. Thanks to the three of you. I just had to stare at it for a while. I realize now that you select which bar/box/header/border, etc you want coloured on the left and then do the colour mixing on the right, one item at a time.

    Again, thanks.

Glad you got it fixed. Tell us exactly where you went and what you did. Makes it easier if somebody else has the problem to figure it out.

Control Panel/Appearance and Personalization/ sub section: Change the theme/select Windows Classic, then Window Colour. Then, from the Window Colours and appearance box, drop down and select what you want to colour from the ITEM menu. It can be coloured and saved. Then select another item from the drop down ITEM menu until you have chosen to colour as many items as you like. Easy Peasy. Just takes 50 questions to this forum and 3 days.
