Does anyone have the problem of opening or sending emails in Gmail in the Opera browser in small text as default? I know it can be manually changed to 'Normal' or larger, but for those of us without the eyesight as acute as birds of prey or the Hubble Space Telescope it can be annoying. This phenomenon does not happen in any other browser when the text is set to 'Normal' as default. But every time I open Gmail in Opera it automatically reverts back to 'Small' as default. This problem is probably an Opera bug as it happens on multiple computers & including portable versions of Opera. Changing the UA doesn't have any effect either. :(

In Gmail, go to Settings and then click the "Labs" tab.

In the "Search for a lab:" box, type in default, select "Enable" by the "Default Text Styling" option, then scroll to the bottom and click the "Save Changes" button.

Go back into Gmail's Settings, and under the "General" tab you should now have a little "Default text style" section where you can select your default font, size, style, etc.. Then scroll to the bottom and click the "Save Changes" button.

I've never experienced it on any other browser. I think that it is an 'Opera' thing. ;)

I've had a love/hate relationship with Opera for over four years. I've always maintained it would be the best browser on the net, if only it worked properly LOL! :D

I have come to the conclusion that it is very probably an extension conflict, as I have Opera set up virtually identically on all three of my computers & even on portables. It even does the same thing on our work laptops when I'm using a portable Opera version. When I disable the extensions it leaves 'Normal' font as default. I will investigate further.

My guess ... 'Ghostery' is the culprit!

Yes, I realised that thanks. :)

OK thanks. I will add them back one at a time after disabling them all. This should find the culprit, although it can sometimes be a certain combination of extensions & they are harder to discover.

I just added Ghostery back & the problem returned. I disabled it & added back 'DDG for Opera' & the problem is back.

I guess I'm going to have to get used to changing the font manually when I compose emails in Opera. Or lose all of my extensions!

I'll experiment a bit further but to be honest, it's a small price to pay for using the extensions. I doubt the OS I am using is a factor. This happens on my custom built x64 Win 7 box, & both on my big laptop & smaller notebook (Vista HP x86). Our work ThinkPads are Win 7 x86.

Thanks for the help anyway. :)

Sorry man. I have installed Opera, as well as a few add-ons, on several different computers here at home and at work, and no matter what multitude of combinations I've tried yesterday and today, for the life of me I cannot seem to break Gmail's "text style" setting. It works, always.

But I'm afraid I gotta bail. I simply don't have any more time, nor the interest, to test every conceivable combination in order to determine what does or does not work. Hopefully, someone with more Opera, add-ons and Gmail experience, as well as time and patience will be willing to drop in here soon and pick up the ball.

    I'm out.

OK, thanks for putting the time in Doc, I appreciate it. :)

It has certainly confused & fatigued me as well. It may even have something to do with the individual personalisation of the browser itself. On all three of my machines they are virtually identically set-up. My portables are also virtually identically configured. If it was happening on just one machine I could put it down to some sort of software quirk or something.

Anyway, I think I will get use to changing the default font size from 'Small' to 'Normal' over time.

With practice it can take between 1 - 2 seconds LOL! ;)
