I am running a XP professional (sp3) system. When I select standy mode, it goes through the steps to shut down correctly..then the monitor turns off but the PC stays running. Anyone got a clue how to change this?

If I am understanding what you are saying, it will stay running or you would not be able to wake it back up by touching a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse.

Thanks for the replies...I have gone to the links you supplied and they are generic instructions for normal problems. This pc acts like it is going into standby but does not shut down the pc completely...just the monitor...that is the issue I am trying to understand...

What it is doing is right. When you touch a key or move the mouse the PC will wake up. The CPU never shuts off.

Sleep/Standby is a low-power state that allows a computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within several seconds) when you want to start working again. Putting your computer into the sleep/standby state is like pausing a DVD player—the computer immediately stops what it’s doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working. The computer is not off. The memory is still drawing enough power to keep it from forgetting what you currently have stored in it.

While sleep/standby draws a small amount of power, hibernation stores the current state of your open documents and programs down onto your hard disk, and then turns your computer all the way off. When you power it back up, the hibernation file is read back up into memory and the prior state of your open documents and programs is restored.

    Hello geno368,

The links and snip quote below should help you set the options you are expecting or desire. Keep in mind that some "computers and XP" had/have bugs using various settings in "power management" but if yours is going to be fussy waking up from such you'll discover this soon enough.

Check and set your options as desired. I strongly suggest you disable Hibernation if you use such. I never did nor do trust this option. To much can and does happen that may cause improper shutdown of PC and "Bang" there goes data. My memory is bad enough without having a comp that has difficulties also.

Gosh, I appreciate all the help...my only issue is that the fan keeps running...everything else seems normal sleep mode. It wakes up and everything.

The fan will run. The PC is not SHUT OFF. If you don't want the fan to run, stick a pencil in it or unplug it and watch the PC burn up.

Hi geno368. What you are describing sounds normal. When you put the computer into Standby/Sleep mode, does the power light on the case blink or turn from green/blue to an amber color? If the case power light does one of those things then your system is behaving like its supposed to.

You should also hear the harddrive spin down since its not in use when using Standby/Sleep mode.

Mr Bill and Evan, thanks for your replies, however, my 2 other systems go into a low power mode. Monitor light orange, computer light blinks, fans shut down, hd spins down...just saying...

How old is the computer? All of the hardware mayh not be ACPI-compliant.

Drivers are probably the primary cause of Hibernation/Standby/Sleep issues. Outdated device drivers may not support power management and/or cause incompatibility problems.

Some basic graphics drivers, such as a VGA video driver, do not support power management.

Audio drivers must use Windows Driver Model (WDM) architecture exclusively.

Incompatible third-party software may interfere with, or not support power management.

Outdated peripheral firmware can also cause problems.

    etc., etc. ...

It is an older Dell, but I have just re-formatted it and downloaded the device drivers from the Dell support site. In device mgr it shows to be ACPI compliant but don't know about other hdwe.

To check if it might be a problem with devices connected to the computer, disconnect all non-essential connected devices (printers, scanners, USB drives). Restart the computer with only the original mouse, monitor, and keyboard connected. If this resolves the sleep/standby issue, one of the connected devices was causing the problem. Reconnect one device and test to see if the issue occurs again. Continue adding devices and testing until the you find the device that is causing the problem.

As SpywareDr stated, it sounds like an external peripheral device is causing the computer to not enter Standby properly.

In addition to disconnecting any external hardware devices, shut down any 3rd party background programs including antivirus software if its installed and see if that resolves the problem.

Finally, I found out that patience is not one of my best virtues...The fan does turn off, but it takes much longer than I was used to on my others. Thanks for the help!!
