Hi jammer. It is possible that the CD/DVD drive has started to wear out and as a result the drive isn't able to read or play CD's anymore but it can still play DVD's. That tells me that the component in the drive thats in charge of reading CD's has failed.

To rule out that this is not a Windows problem take a look here, Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media.

Can try blowing the dust our f the drive. In the good old days you could get a cleaning kit. Now a days - a new drive only cost a few more dollars than the kit...

Tx for the quick responses y'all... in the course of troubleshooting, I recently discovered an additional oddity..... although the drive doesn't recognize purchased CD/DVD material, it DOES play DVD material I recorded/downloaded from another DVD?! Any thoughts??... tx

The fact that you have tried some of the Windows fixes and that has not solved the problem, leads me to believe that your CD drive has partially failed and I think you might need to order and install a new CD/DVD drive.

You could try following Steve's suggestion and blow out any dust or dirt that could be in the drive itself and see if that works.

The failing|filthy laser light is just strong enough to read some DVDs?

Did you try reading one of the DVDs that can't be read in this drive in a different drive? If it can be read there with no problem, then you know it's not the DVD itself.
