    Hi all,

Glad the BBS is back up, I hope the hacker gets his just deserts.

I have a question about the 2k OS Vs XP Pro. Does XP Pro have any advantages for the audio recordist over the 2k OS

    Thanks

    Dave G.

Yea it has it's advantages. If you had some software you just couldn't make youself stop using just upgrade to XP pro and it more than likely won't work any more. :D

    Yo Smitty,

Thanks for your reply, every piece of software that I have on the 2k drive works on 2k. I was a Mac User before 2000 so all my old software is under the house getting mildewed with the Mac II VX (a real oldie). Any ways, I am sure that the XP will run everything the 2k OS Drive has on it. Sonar, Jammer, EZ CD 5 Platinum, and SoundForge 5.

One thing though, I use a Yamaha DSP Factory which has eight stereo audio devices, and a Yamaha SW 1000 XG which has six stereo audio devices plus a full XG Synthesizer in it. Win 2k has a ten audio device limit, (which is overcome by the Yamaha Drivers and Sonar, so Sonar sees all fourteen) But I also have a SoundBLaster Live Platinum 5.1 that has to be disabled in my 2k drive (have Romtec Trios Hard drive switch) I sure would like to use those soundfonts in my recording. Any one have an answer to that?

I heard XP has a 30 device limit
    Thanks
    Dave G.

XP seems to have more gaming, audio, and graphic capabilities than 2k. However if you are looking for stablity, I would say stick with 2k because it at least has some service packs on it. I use XP everyday at home, but I wouldn't put it to the test in a production environment until after at least SP1.

CD Platnium will work in XP but you have to upgrade to 5.1 from Roxio.
At the time I changed over to XP (Oct. 27th 2001) Norton System works wouldn't work (had to get 2002) Easy Cd Creator wouldn't (and never will). To this day XP loads and says it has to disable my Promise Filter Drivers (raid card) Promise says it doesnt even have filter drivers.
I use XP Pro and Office XP all day every day. From 1 to 3 days every week I have to reboot because something crazy starts to happen and a reboot fixes it. Don't get me wrong, I like XP. I like the clean desk top look but I was spoiled by Win2K pro never rebooting for months.

Thanks both of you for your replies.
I really like 2k and as the old saying goes don't fix it if it ain't broke, and it ain't, so i won't.

The thing that always drives me nuts with Win2k and Audio programs are the new way that the hardware has to interact with Win2k (WDM drivers). Possibly it's just a matter of the audio hardware manufacturers coming up to speed and coming out with reliable hardware. For right now I dual boot to Win98 for all audio programs. I'm using Echo Audio Gina and Layla cards which are a nightmare in Win2k (pops, sync problems, crashes). I've also had a ton of grief from MIDI interfaces on Win2k. Again, quite possibly a driver issue from manufactures needing to catch up. I "m using a 4in/4out Midiman USB. All of this works great on Win98. I'm using it with Cakewalk Pro Audio for multi-tracking audio and midi.

    Does XP use WDM drivers?

XP is an upgraded 2k I hear, I do not know for sure but I hear this is so. I use the Yamaha DS 2416 and the SW 1000 XG and With Sonar, this work well in 2k. Way better than the Cakewalk/DS2416/SW1000XG 98SE combination that I used prior to the 2k Sonar install. I crashed Cakewalk every day in 98SE but Sonar is optimized for the 2k OS and whatever they did, it works. Especially witrh the 1.31 patch. Only one crash and the loss of a performance since the Sonar upgrade months and months ago.
