Does anyone use Opera 12 64 bit? I have been using it on my desktop since the 64 bit was released and I find it very fast and probably the best version of Opera yet. I uninstalled the 32 bit version as it doesn't share the same profile as the 64 bit version and is essentially redundant now I have the 64 bit. Plus the cleanPages extension has to be the best reader I have ever used. Has anyone got any views on Opera 64 bit?

Hi I have used 12 through it's beta phase in 64 bit with no complaints.

If you want to know more about whats happening in the Opera community and whats new, log into "My Opera" with the browser link on your speed dial page.

    Regards Ian.

Hi again, a few bits copied from Opera's web site!

For anyone else who may be interested.

Good things come to those who wait. We are happy to announce that Opera 12 is finally here! This brand-spanking-new version of Opera is packed with themes and a multitude of other cool features to play around with. Get it now, fresh and tasty from our download servers!

    Instant Makeover

With Themes, making Opera your own has never been easier. We have over 350 themes already, handily collected in our Themes Catalog. Want to see some of our top picks? It was hard to choose, but we put a few favorites on our download page as well, so no more excuses to bump along in a plain vanilla browser. Get ready to tour the internet in style!

Way faster and more stable than ever

64-bit support means that Opera is able to use your processor in a better way. The benefit for you is faster page loading, improved startup time and a better overall Opera experience. Another benefit is something called Out-of-Process Plug-ins. This makes plug-ins (such as Flash) run separate from Opera, so if any plugin crashes, Opera remains stable.

We have done a ton of updates to our address bar. The new drop-down suggestions should help you find exactly what you are looking for, the first time around. URL shortening in the address field is also a lot smarter. It will even show you page titles and a small page excerpt when searching!

    Put yourself in the picture

Do you have a web cam on your computer? One of the coolest things Opera 12 can do is access your camera, letting websites snap a picture of you. The next time you need to set a profile picture of yourself, you don't have to bother uploading a picture from somewhere else - let Opera 12 do it instead! To see it in action, try updating your My Opera profile picture! Other exciting demos are available from our developer relations team on their new site Shiny Demos!
    Full speed ahead

Hardware acceleration allows Opera 12 to render graphics using your graphics card (GPU). This makes animations and other graphics-intensive operations a lot faster. Note that this feature is disabled by default, so in order to use it you need to set EnableHardwareAcceleration to 1 in your Opera:Config. WebGL can be enabled by setting EnableWebGL to 1 as well.
    More features

To see all the changes check out our latest change logs.
Support for the Do Not Track header
    CSS3 Animations and Transitions
    HTML5 Drag and Drop
Support for CORS — not the beer, but rather Cross-Origin Resource Sharing
    Right-to-Left (RTL) Script Support Added
Improved language support (Persian, Urdu, Hebrew, and Arabic).
    Window and Tabs API

    @ianamal

Thanks for the info, especially about the :config. I'm not sure about the hardware acceleration. I've recently stopped using Waterfox since Mr Alex has been using an Intel compiler (I have an AMD processor) & I've also been having some glitches with Waterfox. To be honest, I can't see any noticeable speed differences with it & Fx 14.0.1 & there's no incompatibility problems with Firefox.

So I find Opera a good 64 bit alternative (I am not too keen on IE 9). It's a bit of a pity that Opera doesn't play well with Skydrive, but that's a Microsoft thing. I've been using Opera on & off for several years.

Have you tried the Dr.Web link checker?

I can install it, but I can't find it in the drop-down menu. I have the VirusTotal extension anyway.

As a rule I tend to stay away from the Opera forums as they are a bit of a trollfest!

I don't get involved, just keep track of whats going on.

I'm pretty sure 12 is completely finished but they might try to get you on "next" first, it's stable so no probs in use and then it will update to 12.

It might depend on where you download it from!

    Thanks Dave!

Mines behaving itself so I leave it alone, this one was originally 11 then Next and updated over a couple of months to 12.

The only "funnies" I've encountered are when my old router goes off, BT say there's a hundred good pairs in the cable down the main street.

The engineers I've spoke to say it needs changing, a couple of heavy lorries vibrating the road and it does a funny.

I'm on my second pair and a new card in the exchange in five months and third router, the lines BT but the provider is the post office and they use the old Xyzel routers.

When the contract runs out I'll go back to Virgin, so anyone thinking of using the PO Don't.

    Regards Ian.

It's always best to upgrade any browser; predominantly for security reasons. I remember back in the day when Opera didn't even have extensions. The only thing bugging me at the moment is the fact that Opera doesn't play well with Mickeysoft's new take on Hotmail (Outlook). It's not my main mail site though. I don't use Opera mail either.

I tried Opera out of desperation at first, not really falling for any of the others and liking the speed dial similar to old versions of Chrome.

Trying a beta is a risk to a degree but sometimes a learning curve and helps the programmers get it right, hopefully.

I'm still using gmail for my emails it's not messed up yet, not heard of "mickeysoft" and I didn't like outlook because of various problems years ago and haven't used it since.

Anyway thanks for the feedback I hope all is well with you and yours, Ian.

LOL 'Mickeysoft' is a play on the word Microsoft. :D

Outlook may be a beta now, but it was originally a business email. It seems OK.

I use Chrome sometimes, although the first WebKit engined browser I ever used was Safari (for Windows), then SRWare Iron. Apple aren't supporting Safari for Windows any more apparently. It doesn't work well on Windows, although it works better on Macs. Iron is too buggy these days IMO. It was always a bit buggy right from the start.

Opera has its faults, page breaking being one of them, but it's the only 64 bit browser that works for me these days. Unless I use IE 9, which I am not too keen on.

Sorry for being a bit dim LOL.

Just downloaded 12.01 again, done a clean install. I have changed OS to W7 Ultimate.

I can use Home Premium to replace XP on my old Dell, having three computers is a good thing most of the time but not always.

I haven't tried the config option in 12.1 yet have you? I don't think it would make any difference to the laptop because the I5 series route the graphics through the CPU and the old HP has two cards SLI'd!

The old Dell might have but got a new card for that as well so I'll wait until they're both updated and all software is installed and configured before I mess with anything else.

    Thanks for the reply, Ian.

I haven't changed anything in config yet, I'll have to investigate further. It can be annoying keeping everything updated on multiple computers. My Toshiba laptop needs repairing at the moment. My old desktop is in pieces as I figure out the WiFi which leaves me with my (relatively) new custom built 64 bit desktop & my notebook. So, technically I only have to keep two going atm LOL.

I almost considered going for Win 7 Ultimate when I had my 64 bit desktop built, but in the end decided to stick with Home Premium. I am not that bothered about upgrading. I won't upgrade any machine to Win 8 either. If I buy a new laptop I may consider it, but Opera runs just as well on Mac & Linux. Microsoft are going to support Win 7 for quite a few years yet & I think some Opera skins look great in aeroglass (apparently discontinued in Win 8). I really like Win 7, I've only really been using it regularly for about 18 months. As long as Mickeysoft support it I'll continue to use it.

Do you use Ghostery on Opera?

It has been a tad controversial since it was acquired by Evidon but I think that it works well on Opera. I used to use it on Firefox (& SeaMonkey) but it started to get bloated IMO. Plus it seemed to feel the need to flag me every time it updated on Firefox. It seems fine on Opera 12.01 & now even lets me open eBay pages, which it wouldn't on Opera 12 (64 bit or 32 bit).

A NoScript like extension would be nice for Opera, but none of the attempts so far have either been totally successful or been maintained regularly.

Yep it can be a pain keeping it all running right, I've installed Ghostery and will see what it's like.
I hate some of the pop ups and adverts especially a video that loads automatically and slows the page loading process down.

If you don't have a machine with two processors then I don't think W& Ultimate is worth it, to encrypt a drive or features like thirty odd languages, virtual desktop booting stuff like that and Pro supports two CPU's as well.

When I changed this machine's OS from XP to W7 I noticed it was slower you see and it was because Home Premium doesn't support the second CPU, #Mickeysoft.

I'll give the Aeroglass a try in opera as well thanks, Ian.

There are a couple of skins I like: Z1-Glass & Keramik. The latter is very much like Cat Thief's 'Mostly Crystal' theme for SeaMonkey.

You might like Flag Button as well. Opera doesn't have the same security as Firefox or Chrome, so anything you can utilise to check a webpage is useful. Take a look at VirusTotal as well.

    Absolutely brill!

I had not bothered with skins or anything before but the aeroglass looks great.
Ghostery is fab too and I'm now using the Flag button as well, much appreciated.

Got to get ready to go out now, on the p LOL.

    Thanks Ian.

Yeah, if you read much on the web check out cleanPages. It has to be the best version of Readability I have ever used. I need two separate readers on Firefox to be compatible with all of the pages I read online. Not with this one though! Even if it hasn't been updated recently it still rocks.

I like WOT & use it on almost every browser I use. Again, like Ghostery, it has been a tad controversial at times. If you've never used it, you have to make a (free) account with Web Of Trust for the plug-in to work properly. It is light & responsive as extensions go though, unlike the McAfee similar one. Plus, if you land on a page that WOT deems a bit dodgy it doesn't allow JavaScript to run until you allow it. Which has saved my bacon a couple of times I reckon, even if it is difficult to infect 64 bit machines with drive-bys.

I just can't get the Dr. Web link scanner to work in the dropdown menu. In fact it doesn't appear on it (unlike Firefox or Chrome) at all. It has been updated recently. This is quite a useful scanner on Firefox, let's face it, the Russians are good at malware prevention/detection. They should be, they cause a huge amount of it.

Hello again, tried them both very useful browser add ons!

The Dr. web link scanner I can't use as I am not on Farce book, sorry.

For anyone else reading these posts I'm loving Opera!

I wish I'd had a mess with the extensions a year ago.

    Thanks again Dave, regards Ian.

AFAIK Dr. Web should just show on the drop down menu & you should be able to scan any link, regardless of whether you are on Farcebook or not (I aren't either). That's how it works in Firefox anyway. Unless I've misunderstood how it works in Opera:

"Dr.Web checks all external links from FaceBook, Google+, and VK (vKontakte) while warning the user about trying to move to a third-party site and to check the link. It is also possible to enable or disable this option in Dr.Web LinkChecker settings. "

If you look at my jpeg attachment of Firefox's dropdown menu you can clearly see the Dr. Web icon & name. Clicking this will allow a scan of the link & a pop-up GUI will appear.

I cannot see this same icon or lettering on Opera's dropdown menu when I install Dr. Web.
