I bought a 7 external USB unit from Maplins. The unit comes complete with a 5 volt mains transformer. Instructions where very little in content, referred to the transformer use as required. I have used the USB unit with and without the transformer. Can anyone advise whether the transformer should be used or not. Regards.

I would imagine that if it worked without it's transformer power supply, it must work off your comp USB power.
I have one and always use it powered from it's transformer as there would be less demand on the comp. Neil.

If you hooked up five external hard drives - odds are real good you'd need the power supply.

A mouse, keyboard and three flashdrives probably don't need it...

Thank you for prompt reply, most appreciated. Yes, now decided to connect power to the USB unit. I did read sometime ago, not to over load the computers USB outlets. Regards.

Not all usb devices need external power. For example, you would not need to use its power if you connected a usb printer to it, the printer has its own power supply.

Also, it depends on the computer port you connect the hub to. Not all comp usb ports are powered internally.

Generally, you won't need to use the usb hub power supply unless you connect a device that requires power, such as a motorized Web cam.
