I am installing Windows Home Server 2011. I am just trying to learn how use a server. I’m at the point in the setup where I’ve been told that I can finish on a client computer. I can see the server with Windows Explorer on the client computers. I can click on it and see the folders. The references I seen say to use IE and enter http://servername/connect . When I do that, I get an error message from OpenDNS
We did not find any results for: servername/connect
BTW, I di use the actual name of the server. I tried on two other client computers "“ both wired and wireless.

In the Remote tab of System Properties, The "Allow Remote Assistance connections to the computer" is greyed out.

Evidently it was Open DNS that was the culprit. I used the IP # instead of the name and it worked. After that I was able to use the server name. I'll have to verify that later on another client computer. My server is tied up building a RAID and it's taking forever.

I'm still using the old version of WHS (can't use RAID), although I have the new version, but I don't see a reason to upgrade...

When I add a new system I usually 'browse' to the server using Windows Explorer (Network > Server Name). I then go to the Software > Home Server Connector Software to run the connector setup.

It worked to use the IP address on my laptop, but not my desktop. The file downloaded has the name ComputerConnector(192.168.0.194).exe. When I run it I get and error message that states the file name contailns nonstandard characters.

Arie, thanks for the response. When I go to (Network > Server Name), I can't find the Software folder. I see, Documents, Music, Pictures, Recorded TV. Users and Videos. I've gone though all the folders to no avail. I also gone to (Network > Server Name) in Other Devices in end up downloading a file named ComputerConnector(fe80__b487_7b89_297_e93c).exe. I get the same error as before. Changing the file name to use the server name doesn't work because of information in the file header.

It took ~34 hours to initialize my 6 x 2TB drives as a RAID 5. I built a system base on an Ivy Bridge Core i5 and 8GB of RAM on a mini ITX mobo. I know it's overkill, but it may be my last. I'm just trying to keep my 76 year old brain functioning. It's really getting a workout with this build. I built my first system in 1977.

    Hi,

As I noted, I'm not running the latest version of WHS. Below is what I see in Win7 Network. Forget about WebFolders4WHSShare, that's an add-on.

    The Software share contains

    Home PC Restore CD
    Home Server Connector Software

I'm always building my own systems too. I tried to run RAID on the original WHS, although I knew it wasn't supported... It didn't work.

One day (in the distant future) if I got nothing to do I might do a fresh install of WHS 2011 (probably the last version of WHS), but for now my system is working fine, so no need to mess with it :D

After searching the web, other forums, etc., I've finally got it running. I don't know what the real problem was. One may have been the use of OpenDNS, another may have been using dashes in the computer names, and I can't even remember all the things I tried. I finally decided to do a new install. Everything isn't setup yet and I and I may still run into obstacles, but I feel I can see light at the end of the tunnel

I forgot to mention that I disabled the homegroup.
