My grandson's pc powers on and the monitor power is on, shows no graphics.
The fans work and the amber indicator light comes on, but goes off after a about 25 seconds.
It is probably not worth to fix this PC, but is there a way to check if it is the HD or the integrated graphics? If possible We would like to save the HD for an external drive.

    pc specs:
HP Pavilion a1222n (about 7 years old)
    Base processor
    Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz
    Chipset
    ATI Radeon XPress 200
    Motherboard
    Manufacturer: ASUS
    Motherboard Name: A8AE-LE
    HP/Compaq motherboard name: AmberineM-GL6E
    Memory Installed 1 GB (2 x 512)
    Video graphics: Integrated graphics
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    Microsoft Service Pack 2

Is there evidence that the PC boots up? By this I mean is there an indication of hard drive activity for a few minutes indicated by a flashing/continuous hard drive light or audibly.

If so it points to a graphics chip issue, but as a double check is it possible to test the monitor on another computer?

I would suggest running the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic software, but if there is no display that would be futile! FWIW ....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

    Toshiba

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I did hook up my own monitor and had no display either. The harddrive light stays on only for about 25 seconds, thus probably not enough time to load windows?
Could it be by co-incidence that both the graphic chip and HD have failed?

As I recall, but don't take this as gospel, the POST screen should show regardless of whether or not a hard drive is installed. If that surmise is correct it looks like a motherbord failure.

Thanks again, I'll wait for a while longer and see if someone can confirm this. Just so that I can explain to my grandson that it would not be worth the money trying to fix it. Of course I shall show him the forum url from where I got all this wisdom. :)

Hi voltigeur. Pete's assumption is correct. Even if the harddrive were to not be connected to the machine you should still get a display and the machine will still POST even if the harddrive is missing. The harddrive is not to blame.

The fact that the machine does not POST at all and you get no picture tells me that the graphics chip on the motherboard or the motherboard itself is not functioning properly. Open up the computer case. Do you see any bulging or leaking capacitors on the motherboard?

Thanks Evan, with the determinations of you and Pete, I am sure that the graphics chip is indeed the problem. I shall take out the hard drive and junk the rest. The PC is too old to have it fixed.
    Thanks again.
