My son has a Packard Bell laptop model MS2273 originally loaded with Vista Home Premium. He had a few problems with Vista and a friend of his suggested linux (I believe it was ubuntu). sometime later he wanted to revert to Vista. His friend loaded Vista back on which appeared OK to the point you enter the windows code. The sticker on the bottom of the laptop had all but worn away so he entered a code of his own. The laptop will now not load windows. You get to the safe mode screen select your option, it runs and reverts back to the screen. I've tried booting it from the Vista CD, all it does is start loading, show a blue screen and return to the safe mode options screen.

    Any help gratefully received

    Thanks

Hi BrianC500. When the computer reboots after selecting Start Windows Normally do you see any error message or does the computer just reboot itself?

When you boot from the Vista DVD can you read what the blue screen error message says?

You might have to disable the automatic restart on system failure option so you can read the BSOD or error message. For instructions on how to do this take a look here, Disable Automatic Restart From the Advanced Boot Options Menu in Windows 7.

I know the article talks about Windows 7 but the steps work the same way on Vista.

    Hi,

Thanks for that. Unfortunately Disable Automatic Restart is not in the list of options. The BSOD appears for a fraction of a second if you try to start it normally, not long enough to get any information. It automatically brings up the Windows Error Recovery screen which advises restarting with the Windows disc in, but that does nothing. It also gives me the usual boot options but without the disable option.

Right after the motherboard logo shows up when you boot up the computer, tap F8 on startup to bring up the advanced boot options menu and you should be able to disable the automatic restart on system failure option from there.

What sort of Windows installation disk are you using? If you use the original Packard-Bell installation method, you shouldn't be asked for a Product Key.

Blue screens (BSOD) during installation might say to me that the AHCI setting in the BIOS needs to be changed.

    Hi Evan & mattman.

    Pressing F8 brings up the same Windows Error Recovery screen which suggests;

Insert the windows installation disc and restart the computer
Choose language settings and click next
    click "repair your computer "

    Other options
    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Last known good configuration
    Start windows normally.

There is no option to disable the automatic restart feature.

    Mattman,

The laptop came with a Windows Vista Home Premium inc SP1 disc. That's what we've been trying to use only to no avail.

Have you tried loading the BIOS settings to their default values? Did you go into the BIOS to check if you can change the AHCI setting?

From the Advanced Boot Options menu see if you can boot into Safe Mode or try selecting the Last Known Good Configuration option and see if you can boot Windows Vista.

Do you know who the manufacturer of the laptop harddrive is?

Sorry for the delay in replying. Work has demanded so much time all I've done is work and slept.

My son decided to boot the laptop from the windows vista CD. he then left the laptop to it's own devices, after half an hour it suddenly started the windows loading procedure. We successfully reloaded windows as a fresh install using his friends product key as the tag on the laptop is worn away. Hey presto we had a working laptop. Half an hour later it died again. I now have the option to disable the auto restart which I have done but it won't boot up at all now, not even is safe mode. We have another hard drive from a damaged laptop and are thinking of swapping them over. Is that viable?

Yes its worth a shot. As long as the other harddrive is a SATA drive you should be able to connect it to the laptop and perform a fresh install of Windows.

Still waiting for my son to bring the other hard drive. I'll mark this thread as resolved and if I have further problems I'll let you know. Thanks for the help and advice on this.

    Regards

    Brian
