I got the Cisco Valet M10 router since they said it was easy to set up with a usb dongle. I have been using an old link system b router, that I quit using. My g linksystem router(which worked fine, but a little slow) just quit when trying to update my firmware. Linksystem said it was out of warrenty and the could only help me is I gave them $29.95.

I bought the Valet M10 from Walmart for $25.00 with free shipping. Well when I followed the setup instructions, using the usb dongle, my computer hardbooted down and lost my data that I had not saved. It then tried to start my computer and continued to shut down repeatedly. I finally unplugged to to get it to stop.

Long story short, after waiting 7 hours, Cisco still has no idea how to fix it. The main reason for buying it, was to get an easy setup. This Product Cisco,Valet M10 stinks. Customer service ***** too. Does any body know how to easily fix this? If not I am sending it back to Walmart for a refund.

Cisco's Valet M10 Setup, Wireless Router Going Back

I have just contacted Walmart to return the Cisco Valet M10 wireless router. I give up.

I have not heard from Cisco after 24 hours. Their service department does not seem to care about anything but money. By the way, I think buy USA. I guess everything is now made in China. Customer service is in India. Does anybody at Cisco work in the USA?

My experience is if it is out of warranty, they offer no help. If it is in warranty, they offer no help.

I cannot prove it, but upgrading LINKsys/Cisco firmware for my old WRT54 v 4 for older routers render them useless. I only tried to upgrade the firmware on this because I thought it would work faster with Windows 7. What a mistake. Then they would only help for $29.95.

Then, when you buy a new router, they again are no help. I will purchase another companies router from another company. I have no need to play games, etc. Just need a good reliable router.

At this point, a Belkin seems attractive. Any suggestions for a good, inexpensive wireless router for home use, that offers customer support?

Oh, by the way, Cisco said wireless routers are only good for 2 or 3 years. They did not recommend upgrading firmware on routers older than 3 years.

Only time I upgrade firmware is when I've read that doing so will fix a specific issue I might be having..... If I don't have a specific problem, I don't upgrade... One wrong little blip can kill the device...

Cisco's Valet M10 Setup, Wireless Router

Thanks for the advice on not updating firmware devices. I have learned my lesson. In today's computer age, it seems like one could (should) be able to recover from these issues.

It seems it is to the advantage to the device companies to have the blip. That is the reason I am returning the Cisco Valet M10 Router, rather than dinking with it to make it work.

You should be able to recover the WRT54g doing a 30-30-30.

Download the firmware for your router version. (you may need it latyer)

Disconnect the router from UTP cables (not the power cable).
Push reset button for 30 secs.
Without releasing reset button, disconnect power cord.
Hold the reset button for another 30 secs.
    Replug the power cord.
Still hold the reset button for another 30 secs.
Release the reset button and give the router about 10 secs to resettle.
Disconnect power cord for another 10 secs and then reconnect.
All should be in default settings now.

This procedure is usually called 30/30/30 reset.

This is a dd-wrt page that details how to recover from a bad firmware flash. Even though you're not using dd-wrt firmware, it stall applies. Abd you CAN use dd-wrt with version 4 of the wrt54g, I do.

I sent the Valet M10 back. Good thing I bought it at Walmart. No problem with returning it. I am still waiting for waiting for Cisco's Technical to contact me.

    Resolved!
