I have a PC running Win98SE with a serial mouse connected to the DB-9 comm port due to this machine not having a PS2 mouse port. The current mouse is a simple two button device and I'd like to upgrade to a newer style scroll type. Problem is, all of the newer mice seem to have a PS2 type connector, and when I attempt to use one of those PS2 to DB-9 serial port adapters the operating system can't seem to find the new mouse. I get an error message stating "mouse not detected" upon bootup. What am I missing here? When I connect the old mouse back to the machine, things are fine. Any ideas?

    Stevereno,

Does your new ps2 mouse say it will work as a serial mouse?

Any ps2 mouse that I have bought for use on a serial port has said on the box it will work as serial and has come with the adaptor that you speak of to mate it to the serial port.

But that doesn't mean that any ps2 mouse will work on a serial port just because it fits on the adaptor.

Case in point, none of my Microsoft ps2 mice work as a serial mouse but my $3 no name ps2 mouse that came with the adaptor and specifically listed serial as an option works like a charm as a serial mouse.

I think it's sometihng to do with the circuitry of the mouse. I don't believe all the pins on a ps2 mouse are used. In the ps2/serial mice I think those unused pins are assigned a function allowing the mouse to work when hooked to a serial port.

My only luck finding serial mice these days (scroll or otherwise) is going with generic ones. I think that Microsoft and Logitech abandoned serial a while ago.

    Regards,

    Gary

Appreciate your reply. I WAS trying to use a MS PS2 type scrolling mouse with an adapter I picked up from a friend that didn't need it for his install. I thought that since it fit the adapter just fine, it oughta work. There I go thinkin' again! I'll take your advice and pick up one that advertises to be "either-or" and give it a shot. Seems like I learn more everytime I visit this site... thanks to people like you.

I'm using a Belkin PS-2/Serial mouse that I picked up at the local Office Depot for about $10.00 (US) with a $5.00 rebate on it. Mine also came with the serial adapter and it's fine on the serial port but as iceolated said earlier it stated Serial/PS2 on the box. Looking under the mouse all I see is a FCC I.D. #, a serial #, and this # F8E204 which I believe is a model number. Oh and I'm running Win98SE on what was a Pent. 166 but I did a CPU upgrade to an AMD K6-2 400Mhz from Evergeen Technologies but the mouse worked fine before the CPU upgrade.

Maybe some of this will help

I am finding it harder and harder to find a Serial/PS2 pointing Device.

Everything now seems to be PS2/USB. Or USB/PS2

And you guys are so right that is not funny.

Any mouse the says PS2/Serial may not work as planned. But if it says Serial/PS2 in usually works fine in either.

I have two Scroll Wheel devices. One Logitech PS2 and one MS USB.

Having the PS2 gives me a mouse in DOS.
