I have a customer with an XP box which has been running well for several years. Recently he has had a strange effect on screen which I can only describe as somewhat pixelated. Please see the attached image and let me know if anyone has any ideas.

The video card is a Radeon X1300 PCIe. We updated the driver but there is no change. Swapping monitors reveals the same appearance.

    Thanks for any thoughts

Reseat the graphics card and check the heatsink on it for dust buildup.

Hi cspgsl. It looks like the video card is experiencing video corruption. This most likely means a dying video card.

Follow what Whiskeyman suggested and try removing all dust inside the computer and see if there is any improvement.

If there is no change then you will have to get the video card replaced.

I personally would swap in a known good PSU before spending any money on replacement parts. While I agree this appears to be heat, and/or a graphics card issue, graphics card issues can also be caused by a weak or failing PSU.

These are excellent troubleshooting steps, especially swapping monitors. With the same problem on the second monitor, you eliminated your 1st monitor from the equation. Good move.

While reseating cards is an old tried and true method of scrapping the contacts clean for a better mechanical connection (an essential prerequisite for a good electrical connection), it is not normally necessary today - UNLESS the card was not seated and secured with the retaining s c r e w properly in the first place.

@Admin - Please, this is a technical site used to discuss hardware issues. Hardware contains, nuts, bolts, and lots of "screws ". "*****" (s c r e w) is not a bad word. While it can be used in a bad manner, there is an excellent moderator staff here to manage those miscreants. Please adjust your censors to make "working" hardware problems easy on the "good folks" here - by far, the majority of your visitors. I mean I can say screws but not *****? ???
