    Here's a good one...
I am running XP. When I use IE 6, a majority of pages have invisible icons or pictures, with white squares and a red "X" inside. You can still read the typed words over the icons, but the rest is gone.
I have already checked that the "show pictures" box is checked under IE... Tools>Advanced>Multimedia.

    Anyone else experienced this before?

Red "X" without the icon pictures

Those were good ideas.... but it did not work.
I also tried to restore from earlier dates, by system restore.....but
    no luck. Any other ideas?
I may end up reinstalling everything. Oh what fun.

Gas Man--No more good ideas, but what happens when you right click on those Red X's and click Show Picture? Sometimes the red X just goes away, since whatever image it represents has really already downloaded and displayed.
And if that does not help, is the image identified by URL when you right click and click Properties? If you copy and paste the URL into your Address bar and hit Enter, you might see what you are missing.
P.S. The real mystery is why this is happening only some of the time.

    Thanks for the help.
Right clicking and "show picture" does nothing.
Under properties, the missing pictures are gif's and jpg's.
    Oh well.

Just came acrossed your post. I have recently upgraded (4 days ago) from Windows ME to XP. I have the exact problem you have, except by Rt. clicking and Show Picture, it shows the picture. If I leave the page and return I have to Rt. click and Show Picture agian.
Something I find really strange is this happens only sometimes on some sites. Example I have been on the net now for about 1 1/2 hours and everything is great, well was, until I got to this BBS and no pictures loaded at all, yesterday it was fine.
    This is most annoying.
All my updates are up to date.

    possible solution

Tried everything to solve the problem.
Finally decided to reinstall XP. It does not change any of your extra installed programs or settings. Backed up everything any ways. Good news is that it solved the problem. So...... I never found the corrupted file, but now things are better.

    Thanks for all the inputs.

mopar--Thanks for posting back with the good news! But which particular fix was it? That first site has quite a few choices.

To disable Norton Firewall. I did and everything was fine. Also to repair the problem you must completely uninstall then re-install Norton firewall.
I have also done this and so far all looks good.

    Thanks for your help.
